As the SPIRITS final investigation of 2004 proved, it's not always easy to have a cut and dry answer when it comes to ghost investigation. 

This family was different than most.  The homeowner who contacted the SPIRITS was very thorough in her investigation of us.  Uncertain of what to expect, she asked many questions.  Her caution was understandable:  she was a parent of two children, and we are a group of individuals who believe in, and investigate, ghosts.

After a long phone conversation, her curiosity was satisfied and the SPIRITS were invited to come and investigate the home. 

This family experienced strange phenomena for years, even as they moved in and out of houses across the Tampa Bay area.  Some of these include:

*Her daughter, still a young child, was found in the middle of the night sleeping fully clothed in a bathtub of water, only her nose breaking the surface.  The homeowner, who worked a night shift, came home to discover her child in the bathroom.  Distraught, she quizzed both her husband and son; neither had awakened during the event.  The girl, herself, remembered nothing of the experience.

*Each home that they lived in experienced some form of infestation. The first was that of bird mites, something that stumped the exterminators hired to get rid of the pests. 

Bees nestled in one house.  They called in a beekeeper, and he set up small hives baited to draw the bees, then to move them to a new location.  He left and returned several weeks later.  The bees were not in the new hives, nor were they in the house.  They had mysteriously vanished. The beekeeper reported that this had never happened before. 

A third house flooded with spiders.  Yet another occurrence had flies that covered the windows in one bedroom.  They also disappeared without a trace.

*The homeowner's mother and daughter reported seeing ghosts in one home. 

*In the current house, a mirror, which was stationary for months, suddenly fell over and shattered.  A large toolbox rocked off of the dryer it was sitting upon.  Light bulbs popped at an incredible rate.  Shadow figures appeared, and an invisible hand grabbed her daughter just two days before the SPIRITS came to investigate.  

What we discovered was a two-fold answer.  The household did have a visiting spirit.  He was a handyman who had worked or lived in the proximity of the house.  He came and went, often checking on the household because of his own curiosity.  He produced several strong orb images, as well as EMF spikes. 

The second aspect surprised those present.  The family, itself, was a source of energy.  In answering the SPIRITS questions, the mother discovered that she was a SLI-der.  There was a history of ghost sightings that ran through the family lineage.  Also, some of the physical manifestations apparently happened during or after periods of intense emotions.  The night the daughter's hand was grabbed she had an argument with her boyfriend.  The mirror fell after an argument between the two. A doorknob turned of its own accord as the mother cleaned up a broken vase her daughter had given her. 

The family had an older teenager, preparing for college, and a 13 year old.  They had been through several house moves in the past 6 years.  Even the family dynamic had changed through divorce.  Could some of the phenomena be poltergeist phenomena?  Are they channeling excess energies subconsciously?

In the end, only time will tell.  The family continues to keep a paranormal diary and the SPIRITS plan to return for a recheck.

Macdill Investigation

This investigation was my first one back after a long hiatus with the SPIRITS team.  It was great to be back, and the investigation did turn up some interesting finds, but I myself was unfortunately a little "out of tune" with the spiritual world that night.

Normally I'm fairly sensitive and intuitive, picking up on spiritual entities and being guided to areas of interest or activity.  Last night, however, I was dead as a doornail, spiritually speaking.  As we inspected one room after the other, I felt nothing.  I was beginning to wonder if this was a "control house"a place that wasn't actually haunted, to test for the team's accuracy in reporting.

The team founder, Brandy, put me in charge of using the EMF meter during the investigation.  The device measured electromagnetic fields.  I had never had the opportunity to use one before.  So carefully and slowly, I moved the device around every room and inspected every corner.  Most of the time, the EMF meter didn't register a thing.

Sometimes, however, the needle did spike.  There were two instances of a "possible" spikewhen the needle moved, but I wasn't sure why.  The device is fairly sensitive, and a simple bump can push the needle a bit.  But once or twice, the needle seemed to briefly spike beyond what a normal bump would do.  We couldn't correlate it with any other events or findings at the same time.  So we made a note of it and keep going.

Other times the needle spiked for perfectly understandable reasons.  Whenever the coffee maker, microwave, or refrigerator turned off or on, it sent a brief spike of EMF.  My meter, of course, picked it up.  We also found a corner of the house that generated a strong electromagnetic field in one corner.  The homeowner explained that the power box was outside, on the opposite side of that wall.  Later when we investigated the outside area of the property, I confirmed that the power box was the source of the strong EMF field.

One time, per the homeowner's son's request, I scanned a little scooter bike for EMF.  He said it had no battery currently installed, but wanted to see if it generated any readings.  At one point, my finger bumped the metal bar on the bike, discharging a static shock.  At the same time, the EMF meter spiked.  I couldn't get the meter to move around the scooter before or after.  I wondered if the accidental bump and static shock could have been enough to trigger the EMF meter.  In later retrospect, I realized that static is just a bunch of built up ionized energy (strong positive or negative charge).  When I bumped the metal, the electrons discharged to balance the energy.  It's the same thing that happens with lightning.  Lightning is actually a giant-sized static discharge between the earth and sky.  Either way, static is a massive sudden flow of electronswhich would, of course, generate a brief electromagnetic field.

After the entire team had finished investigating the property, we gathered in the living room and shared our findings.  Although I hadn't sensed anything, others certainly did.  The homeowners then revealed the paranormal activity they had been experiencing.  The group offered some tips, insights, and advice that seemed to offer a little encouragement and understanding for the homeowners.  But perhaps most of all, they were happy to know "they weren't crazy."

Towards the end of the investigation, the SPIRITS team decided to see if they could make contact with the entity.  They placed the EMF meter in the center of the room, verbally asking for the entity to move the needle to respond to yes/no questions.  At first, nothing was happening.

By this time, I had started to "tune in" a little bit.  I felt that the entity was "scared" and that it felt "too crowded" with us all there in the room.  I mentioned it to the group.  The homeowner confirmed that there usually weren't this many people around.  The SPIRITS team tried backing off and creating more space in the center of the room.  I, too, hid back and away.

Brandy mentioned something about the entity now having plenty of spaceand the needle spiked!  I wish I could have seen it.  Excited by this sudden response, they tried to get someone to focus a camcorder on the meter before they continued.  A few people moved around, got closer to the EMF meter in the center of the room, and then returned back to our distance.

But the minute they did, I felt the "energy" in the room change.  I felt like the entity had left.  I hoped I was wrong; I didn't say anything.  But after they asked a series of questions, the needle failed to move.  It appeared that the entity had left after all.

During later discussion, others admitted to getting the same sense at that moment, too.  Maybe the entity was a little shy or something.  Maybe we scared it off when we got too excited and rushed back after that EMF spike.  I guess we'll never know.

The homeowners themselves were good people.  Although I was "tuned out" for most of the night, I did pick up some basic senses.  The house was warm and inviting.  It felt like a safe place to be.  The homeowner and her family had a good "vibe" too, as you could say.  Another SPIRITS member commented on the homeowner having a good aura.  I'd concur.

Interestingly enough, though, the homeowners seemed to be a little sensitive and a bit "tuned in" themselves.  After discussion with them, we noticed connections and patterns between them.  It seems that all of them have the sensitivity to being aware of spiritual entities.  It also seems that emotionally strong connections (positive and negative) between them tended to help trigger other unusual events.  For example, sometimes one member of the family would think he/she heard another member calling for them.  But they weren't.  I have heard of this phenomena before.  I'm inclined to believe that the family has some degree of a psychic connection with each other.

And I wonderif during times of stress or hurt feelings, odd things can fall or breakcould the family also generate positive, favorable unexpected events, by channeling that same energy with times of happiness and love?

It's an interesting question.  But whatever the case, I'm sure both the homeowners and the SPIRITS team were glad to find nothing malicious or evil was present here.  There was no negative energy, no malevolent entities. The homeowners weren't crazy.  Just a little better tuned-into the spiritual reality.  Good for them.

MacDill Investigation

Group 1 started outside the house and Group 2 stayed inside.

My observations while investigating with Group 1:

Cindy's compass started spinning at the back corner of the house. By the time we reached her it was just wavering. The compass I was holding was stationary.  Cindy and Denise got many pictures of orbs in the backyard and side yard. We found a cold spot in side yard of the house. The temperature was averaging 55-58 degrees. At the cold spot the temperature dropped to 39 degrees twice. It would just stay that cold for one reading. The next reading would register back in the 50's . Inside the house, the temperature reading was consistently in the upper 60's to low 70's. I did not sense any presence or entity in the house..

Started:  6:12, ended 9:00 p.m.

Waning moon, cold front coming into the area.

Brandy, Linda, David, Andy (new potential member), Denise, Cindy, Charles present.

Homeowner, son, and dog present.

First Walkthrough/Silent Walkthrough

We broke into two teams, Brandy, Andy, and David on one, Denise, Cindy, Charles, and Linda on the other.

Son's bedroom:  0 EMF, spikes by radio.  69 - 70 degrees in temp; 68 near windows.

I had possible orbs showing up in images along the wall.  Dog appeared to be calm, and was sleeping on the bed.  Homeowner watched her and occasionally noticed that she growled softly to herself.  My batteries died in the digital camera.

Bathroom:  0 EMF, 68 - 72 degrees in temperature.  No anomalous energies.

Daughter's bedroom:  0 EMF except by lights and near sockets.  Traceable power lines in walls.

Second set of batteries died.  Dog reported growling; David reported a possible EMF spike, but it was uncertain.  I got a possible orb on the digital camera, but also noted an animal hair floating in the air.

Master bedroom:  68 - 69 degrees.  EMF by light switch and light socket.

Digital camera took two dark photos; reasons unknown.  (Camera malfunction?)  I caught a possible orb in some of the photographs.

Living room:  1 possible spike near the TV stand; 0 EMF otherwise.  72 degrees in temp.

Noted that there was a small shelf in the living room that had two framed photographs; thought I had an orb image but believe it was caused by glass refraction.

Kitchen/dinning nook:  73 degrees temperature.  EMF flat, except near microwave, stove, and refrigerator.

I took two more dark photos.  Reasons unknown.

Living room/TV room:  EMF flat, 72 - 73 degrees in room.  I caught a possible orb image in the living room.  The boy's scooter in the living room also gave off EMF and strange readings.  It did not have a battery hook up; uncertain as to why it gave off readings.  Took it outside and still got EMF from it.  Also noted that it's a reflective surface.

Outside:  56 degrees.  No power lines notes.

Discussion:

Linda;  Felt an agitated energy upon arriving and had a chest pain.  Reported that she had a cold spot recorded outside; temps dropped from 50 degrees to 39 degrees.  They tried to do an EVP but outside noise interfered.  Noted Cindy's compass spinning outside, and felt very warm in the daughter's room.

David:  Watching the meter.  Caught some possible spikes in the living room, outside with the bike.  All others he thought could be accounted for.

Andy:  First investigation; concentrating on the camera.

Denise:  Upon shaking the homeowner's hand felt very good; homeowner had a good aura about her.  Noted house had different smells.  Outside of the house, she felt a white male, in his 50s Andrew or Alan Joseph Henry; died of a seizure ; associated with the date 1947.  Followed group around the outside.  Got orb images outside; several dozen in multiple images.  Heard the entity wanted to make contact with a Mary Beth Ellington.  He was possible from the house next door or a house local to the neighborhood.  He came through this house as a drop in occasionally but didn't live there.

Charles:  Compass spinning outside temperature drop outside (both outside thermometers dropped to 39 degrees).

Cindy:  Felt a pain in the right side of her head.  Heard the name Maddie or Matthew and noted her compass spun in certain areas outside.

Brandy:  Reviewed digital images and had strong orb images in the kitchen and dining areas (both on David or Andy).  Noted her battery drain.  Reported having a headache for about 3 days (prone to cluster migraines) but had not taken anything for them (Advil) since noon Saturday.

Recheck:  Outside; kitchen dining nook.

Tried EVP outside.  Unknown results.

Very little happened until the group returned to sit down with the homeowner and discuss our findings. Denise reported feeling an energy shift around the living room and got the EMF meter out.  The entity retreated to the ceiling; David wondered if it was not comfortable with the space of the group (too crowded).  I felt a cooler sensation while sitting in the living room...an energized cold.  Several left the area (bedrooms and kitchen) to give entity space.  When I (Brandy) asked if it was more comfortable with more space, the EMF meter jumped to 2.0, stayed for a second, then dropped again.  When the group tried to get a camera to focus on the meter (and folks came closer to see what was going on), the energy in the room lifted.  I felt it, David did, and so did Denise.  Very little EMF activity happened after that.

there was a second spike at 8:04 (Charles heard a clicking sound when the spike happened; homeowner checked kitchen and turned off the coffee maker), up to 2.0, hovered, then dropped, and again at 8:11.  The final EMF spike was at 8:39.

Brandy read the homeowner's report, which includes paranormal activity at a series of homes from 1991 to present. Each home had a ghost, a bug infestation, and multiple people seeing the ghosts, which varied from location to location.

Homeowner reported Old Hag Syndrome (1), Paralysis Dreams (with entity at foot of bed) (1).  She is a SLI-der.  She did have premonitory experiences (at least one).  She and her kids hear each other calling when no one has spoken.  Dog has abnormal behavior (won't go into living room, protective of homeowner, kissing family often).  Homeowner has seen shadowy figures, peripheral vision manifestation, apportation of objects (but no visual confirmation), abnormal behavior of phones (has had lines checked 3 times; was supposed to have lines checked again that day but phone person did not arrive), and problems with electronics (TV turns itself on and off).  She does hear popping and rustling sounds, white noise, footsteps.  She has not had furniture moving, and the morning of the investigation she had a door knob rattling incident.  (She broke a vase her daughter had given her and was cleaning it up when the door knob turned.  No one was there).

Homeowner reports a heavy mirror falling and breaking after she had an argument, a very heavy tool box pushed off the dryer (verified tool box weight and that it would not vibrate off), and found all windows but her daughter's room unlocked one morning, with the screen to her window pushed in.  Her daughter had an experience of someone grabbing her hand; left small bruise marks.  Incident happened after daughter had an argument with her boyfriend, and the mother had a discussion with a neighbor earlier in the day.  Neighbor told homeowner about a woman who lived in the house with an abusive man, moved out, and committed suicide 2 months later.  She said she always felt strange in the home and said a prayer for the ghost.  Mother was concerned about that.

Post investigation:  I had orb images in son's room, kitchen area, dining nook, and outside.  All appear to have a nucleus, membrane, and depth (textured).  The outside orb shows up as a solid white dot (may not be a spectral orb).

Personal Observations and Conclusions:  I believe that there are two things happening here.  After reviewing the homeowner's past, I see a pattern.  Each house had someone who died near it.  Incidents involving PK often occurred during times of stress or arguments.  Homeowner went through a divorce and is raising two teenaged children; daughter has seen ghosts and several things have happened around her.

It is my belief that the haunting is two-fold.  I think that the family has natural psi-ability (grandmother also described as having seen a ghost, mother, daughter and son all have had interactions with the paranormal).  Due to the stressful nature of their lives for these past 14 years (moving 4 times, divorce, teenage years, etc.) I think that the family is experiencing low-grade poltergeist activity relating to their stress levels.

Secondly, I think that the family has natural psi ability.  I believe that this attracts and allows them to see entities who are attracted to these energies and so come into the home.

The mother is trying to do some genealogy on her family; one of the missing family members is a Henry (I believe).  It could be that there is a family member dropping into see them.

Advice:  Ask entities to leave them alone; protective visualization of white light barrier.  Also, self-suggestion (I am not stressed, I do not want things to happen when I become stressed) to see if PK activity dies down.  I believe it will once the teenagers grow up (as per other poltergeist cases). Keep the paranormal diary going and note the emotional state of all involved when the next incident occurs.

A most unique situation of interactions between the living and the dead.  Very intriguing investigation.  Merits a recheck if homeowner is amenable.

Mac Dill Investigation

Do you believe that each of us are psychic and hold the power of kinetic energy in the palm of our hands?  Well, this hunt reinforced this point to me.  You will understand better after reading this report.  When I first arrived at the Mac Dill residence, I met the owner outside.  When shaking her hand I felt a strong, positive aura around her.  She was full of psychic energy.  What was funny is that she had no idea of this.

Myself, Cindy, Linda and Charles all began our investigation in the yard.  Nothing was significant until we reached the West side of the residence.  Once there I sensed a white male in his 50's hovering around watching us.  I received the names Andrew or Allen ("A" name), Joseph Henry.  I did not know if this was a full name for the energy or if only one of the names were related to him.  The name Henry was the strongest and continuously came through. 

Walking along the West side of the yard, I could feel a cold spot.  Temperatures that were in the 50's everywhere else dropped to 39.5 in the spot where I was standing.  This was also, where the energy was standing.  I also kept getting the feeling that the energy was coming from the unoccupied home to the West of us, or somewhere in the general area.  Many digital photographs were taken and possible orbs were found in the exact locations that I felt the energy's presence.

Once in the home, I did not obtain much further information about the male energy outside other than he was possibly a handy man and died of a seizure.  I also felt he wished to make contact with a Mary Beth and a Helen Ellington (?)  The energy would come into the residence and check on the son, a 13-year-old boy, due to it reminding him of his own grandson.  At no time did I feel that there was any negative energy in this home.

We attempted to communicate with the energy using voice recorders and the EMF monitor.  At first, we were getting nothing.  After moving it to another location and removing several people out of the general area (for crowding reasons), Brandy asked if that was better for him?  Immediately the EMF spiked from "0" to a "2" and stayed there for several moments.  It did not move again until Brandy asked the homeowner if she had any unusual dreams.  It immediately spiked from "0" to "1.5", stayed there for several moments and dropped to "0" again.  The meter never moved again.  Strange?, YES!

Now back to everyone having psychic energy.  Talking to the homeowner after the investigation was quite interesting.  Her and her children all explained phenomena that seems connected in many ways to each other.  They would hear their names called out from one of the other family members, when it had not been.  Each time events would happen, it usually occurred when they were going through rough times.  For example, teen issues possibly causing a mirror to fall and break.  Some of the events that they described appeared to be astral traveling and reentering the body, for example feeling like being held down and finding bruises on the body afterwards.  There are many other events that appear to me to be self-psychic energy from each of the family members.  For more details, please see the homeowner's reports.

I can confidently conclude that although there is a male energy that comes in periodically and possibly family members or loved ones popping in to see the family, most of their long time phenomena occurrences are from their own energies and psychic abilities that they are completely unaware of.  So next time you seem to be having unexplained events occurring around you, you may want to look inwardly at yourself first, then to the unexplained.

Brandy, Charles and I were on site first with homeowner.  When other four members arrived and entered home I noticed a change in the energy in the house.  A jumpy, anxious feel to it.  Whether it was coming from homeowner, other members or suspected entity I can't tell.

Our team started the silent walk thru on the outside of home.

One member's compass was spinning at the back eastern corner of the house.  Then it settled.

Nothing noted in the back yard.  Avg Temp 57 degrees.

West side of house a member found a cold spot.  Temperature was registering between 39 & 40 degrees. Orbs caputres along roof line, no reflective materials notes.  EVP recording done at that time. Results not known yet.

Nothing else significant outside home.

No anomolies noted inside the home, other than the master bedroom and boy's room were the coldest in the house.   Avg 68 & 67 degrees .  Girls room the warmest at 74 degrees.

Nothing to immediately explain the difference in temparatures other than master bedroom and boy's had more windows than girl's room.

During second walk thru on the outside, cold spot still present and more EVP recording done.

Several spikes on the EMF meter were noted during the discussion with the homeowner in the living room and more EVP recording done. .

I think there is a lot of energy in the home but cannot tell where the source is.

I know it's a mirror shot, but normally they show up with large obvious flash signs.  This was an image taken aimed at the wall above the mirror.  So, is this a legit orb?
