As a paranormal investigator, I can tell you that what the SPIRITS of St. Petersburg do is exciting. To go into a new place and determine its ghostly potential by utilizing the mind and equipment is thrilling, especially when confirmed by historic research, documentation and homeowner testimony.
But, what happens when those experiences land closer to home?
In the early part of May, two SPIRITS teammates met me at my home to carpool to our most recent ghost "hunt."
As we talked in the living room, Denise, a sensitive, felt a presence. He had a bushy beard and weighed 240 to 250 pounds. He was in his 50s or 60s and was a male relative of my mother's.
The last bit of information narrowed it down to two individuals: my grandfather, who died in the mid-1990s, and my mother's estranged brother who was, to my knowledge, still living in another part of Florida.
Seeking information, I asked for a name. The one she gave me was not my uncle's.
The entity, however, was not done. As we three stood discussing what had happened, Sandy, another sensitive, felt the of the early Florida springtime. I told her I would turn on the ceiling fan.
Glancing up to spot the switch, I was stunned to see the blades slowly swirling as they picked up speed. The fan had come on by itself. A thought echoed in my mind: it was a prank. It was something that matched my uncle's sense of humor perfectly.
However, time was at a premium. We had an investigation to go to, and so the matter dropped.
I did see my mother briefly that night after the investigation. I told her about the incident, but, as a "non-believer," she shrugged it off.
The next morning I felt compelled to write down what had happened. As I worked, I typed in my uncle's name into an online search engine. My heart sank when an obituary popped up in reply. He died in February of 2003 at the age of 57. His family did not tell us.
Now I had to pass the message on to my mother. I told her that night. She was understandably stunned. Though estranged, she did try to contact her "little brother" to make amends. In life, he never responded.
Yet, in her quest to find out more information she got in contact with family members that we had not communicated with in nearly a decade. Their response was positive, and now, hopefully, our families will remain in touch with one another.
Though she believes her brother's spirit came to inform her of what had happened, my mother remains skeptical of ghosts. She feels that there is always a possibility that Denise's background in police work might have allowed her access to records regarding her brother's death.
However, as a sensitive and SPIRITS team member, Denise has attained a remarkable degree of accuracy on investigations where she recieved no information prior to her arrival on location. In addition, there are no pictures of my uncle in the house. I have spoken of him rarely, if at all, during the years of seperation and never discussed him with the team.
Now, weeks later, I am amazed at what happened and the way the events unfolded. Perhaps, after his death, my uncle saw the wisdom in making the peace he refused years earlier. He certainly found a unique way of doing so.
