House had higher EMF inside. Outside, I saw the EMF meter (mine and Mary's) spike for reasons unknown when we were standing near the property next door. Nothing EVP-wise, nothing on camera.

Just attracted to the stones outside in the yard. A male entity was sensed in part of the house, and a female in another part. In the study, Beth sensed an elemental. When trying to determine what this might be, Beth heard "lower level entity" repeated. We wondered if it was an elemental. Oddly, Charles did research and determined that a gnome might be associated with the stones in the front yard (where I was attracted and wrote down to ask questions). Elementals are very rare in the SPIRITS experience.

Homeowner has a history of interest in the supernatural. Library filled with books. Has had experiences since childhood. Even had a scrying mirror that we used for part of our investigation. In this house, a member of the family died. In 1984 wife locked outside of the front door. 1992: A granddaughter was seen talking to an invisible entity (also petting the air about 3 feet above the ground). 1998: grandson was seen talking to a family member who had just died. In the presence of another in-law, items on the table floated up/were flung off.

Cheryl: While listening to the Ovulis, I walked toward the set of stairs leading from the family room and the Ovulis replied: "step". It repeated this when I stumbled a bit stepping into one of the bedrooms which had a spot on the floor that gave-way a bit under my foot. It said "sister" and "angel" while walking through the kitchen toward the dining area. It said "safe" when I walked to the center of the vacant lot beside the home. It also said "grandpa" which I had not heard it say before.

Cheryl: I felt love and warmth all throughout the home. I also felt the many collected objects in the home had specific vibrations and truly enjoyed being part of the home. The library area felt to be the most active to me. My stomach felt queasy the entire time we were in the library. My throat felt like it was closing up for a brief moment upon leaving the library. The empty lot beside the house didn't give me a pleasant feeling, but according to the Ovulis, it was "safe".

Cheryl: The family has lived there many decades and has a lot of history in the home. Deaths in the home of family members were documented, as well as a violent death in the area behind the house.

Cheryl: While the female homeowner felt threatened by the energy in the library, the man was quite content in there. If she does not feed her fear in dealing with the energy, I don't feel she has anything to worry about. I feel there may be some residual energy from the deceased family members who seem caring and protective of the home and the occupants.

Mary: I was using a KII meter as we investigated the house. In the hall just outside the bathroom, the KII meter began to light up, all the way into orange.red. This could not be repeated whe I attempted to do and there was no natural explanation for it. When we went outside of the house to a vacant lot next to the house, the KII again inexplicably lit up, again going all the way to the red at the same time that Brandy's EMF meter spiked. It appeared to be in answer to a question of Brandy's when she asked if we should go back into the house. Again, there appeared to be no natural explanation for this and it is not the norm for this piece of equipment

Mary: In the study I picked up the name Raymond, although there is no known connection. Also there was a statue that I felt was not a good influence. Outside at the vacant lot I felt that there had been an arbor at one time which later was confirmed by the homeowner. I also picked up the dates of 1946 and 1936.

Mary: To date there is no real information about the property other than the death of a family member in the home and a murder that took place in the alley behind the home several years ago. Additional research will be done in order to try to learn more about the house's history. There was an attempt to turn the vacant lot into a parking lot for businesses recently, but fortunately that was defeated.

Recorders should be left in 2 areas: one the dining area and the other the study. Also there was a picture that had a "black mirror" in it that appeared to have a partial face in it. This mirror should be repositioned to see if that can be recreated.

I have done some research on the " Troll" and Earth Elements. I found the following information in Solitary Witch: A Book of Shadows for the Next Generation by Silver Ravenwolf. She says that all Faery Magick involves creatures such as Fairies, Elves and Gnomes. They came come in many various sizes, but are always smaller than humans. She also says to be very careful working with them and not to make them mad. The Faery Energy can be attached to a race of people, or a place or an element. ( Earth element = gnomes, fire= salamanders, water =undines and air = sylphs) They either like you or they don't. They are not dependable unless you can prove somehow that you 're the dependable, honest and upstanding type. You must have patience when dealing with them.
Some believe that they live in stones found near lakes and river beads. These stones have a hole in them and that is where the Faery Creatures live. Some believe that by blowing gently into the hole you can call the nature spirits. These stones are used in Witchcraft to bring prosperity, good luck and earth -related powers. They can also be hung on bedposts to prevent nightmares. ( fyi....hang the stone.... not the fairy or gnome)
I believe what you saw is a gnome and it is attached to something that has been brought into the house. I believe that this object is the gnome's home. They will not be able to get ride of it until they can locate the object where it lives. They can try to make friends with it and leave it a peace offering of milk and bread, cheese or a bit of honey. The offering can be left outside. Maybe it will leave the house to eat and not return.
There is a spell in the book called the "Gnome Spell for Prosperity". I believe if you go to a Barnes and Noble Bookstore or a Books a Million you will be able to find this book and read more. The pages that contain information on Faeries and Devas are on page 422-426.

Investigation Notes:
Verna: First came into the home, someone is here with you, following you in the home. Positive entity, someone who is very attached. It’s a good thing. I sense parties, lots of fun, happiness. I really got that in the house. Asked homeowner if he was from the north; got that. Got the date in the living room 1927 and that the house was built there. I went to a room that I sensed something with that room. I don’t know what it is that makes me want to know but something is going on in there. When I say energy, there is a lot of energy. It is benign. Moving around. Then, after that, the three of us felt energy in the middle of the hallway (by the bedroom with the bathroom); the woman with the plaid dress and gloves, she is very significant in the family, but I don’t think that she is the one. The energy in the hallway is really robust. [(Homeowner: A lot of our ancestors’ pictures are on the wall)]. We were enjoying the bathroom, enjoying the tile and the fixture, and the old time. All three of us were drawn to it. Someone sits in your office, somebody is working in there when no one is working in there. They are busy. Kitchen, phrase came: “There is no shame, never any shame, remember who you are.” We went into the study and that is the “idea” room. The only problem that I have in there is the red mask; Kathy and I came up with death mask; that is the only thing that threw me off in that room. [Homeowner: I don’t like that mask. I didn’t have a choice in bringing that in this house]. The last thing, I don’t know how I know you, but I know you.
[What did you get from the black mirror?] Verna: I opted out because I was apprehensive. The mirror is for you to look into.
Kathy: The first place that I felt drawn to is the hallway with the relatives, esp. with Aunt Beatrice. Something about her makes me feel warm and happy. I was drawn tot hat last time. The office is an area that I am uncomfortable in. I did not like being in there, and I was ready to leave. In the study I got a pain in the small of my back, but more comfortable than the last time. When Verna said that she didn’t like the mask, I got “death mask”.
Erin: The mask and the mirror, neither one I liked very much. Ovilus didn’t say anything until we were in the living room. It said “thousand dresser property stretch error fell through remote.”
Les: Base reading for the house would be 3.0 to 3.5. Lowest is in the living room and the study. Highest is in the dining room. Higher in the computer room. 81 - 84 degrees, front room is 77 degrees (front living room). Study there were spikes in the EMF meter. There was 1 - 1.5, spiked to 4 a few times, and 10 one time.
Beth: For me, predominantly in this house, there is a female, an older female, and she is a hugger. It is very warm, very sweet and comforting. I feel like she followed me through the house. When looking at the pictures on the wall, Beatrice, that was the impression that was her. I felt the same energy in the kitchen/stove energy. Overwhelming sense of love, like a grandmother thing. That is all I got as far as entities. EMF meter stayed at 2 except in the computer room where it went higher. Also went into the laundry room where it went higher.
Denise: When I first came in I was greeted by a dog; doxie, he was barking, coming back and forth. He was nipping at legs, then he went away. I may have a picture of him on camera. He fled and hid with the photos; jumping up on Brandy for a while. I heard a name “R” sounding name (Rammy, Randy). The meter was normal so I started to talk to the dog and asked if you can bark for me, the meter would spike. Three times it went to 4; every time I would ask it to communicate with me, it was a significant spike and it would come back down for me. For some reason, the “Smithsonian” came to mind, “Jefferson” or “Jackson”; from the MA bedroom. Dog is still here but he has mellowed out now. I could not get it replicated.

Denise: Jefferson Smithsonian/Verna also picked up the Smithsonian, too.
Home owner: Jefferson has always interested me and the Smithsonian is one of the places I have felt the most comfortable, as if I had been there countless times before.
Home owner: I think that my father is here. I believe that my wife’s mother is here. My stepfather is here. From time to time my mother visits. I also believe that my pets Tiddypuss and for some strange reason, I have begun thinking often about my dog pets; Tootsie and Nipp. My wife is allergic to animals, the recollection of my pets sustains me. So I was very happy to know that my pets still love me.

I was living in Delaware. Friend of mine was a seamstress; she had a dummy and as a joke we put the head (mask) on as the head of the dummy. Turned it toward the bed. Left and locked the door. Living in an apartment complex at the time; even though manager had a key to the front door, not to the bedroom door. When we got back, the entire thing had turned its back to the bed.

On the stairs to the family room, I felt a female presence. In the same area, I smelled a floral perfumey scent. In the hallway near the bathroom, I felt the energy of a male. I heard the name Henry and "lot of blood". The name Henry was repeated throughout the investigation although the homeowner could not remember a connection to a Henry. We later found out that a man was shot in the alley behind the home. The homeowner thought the man's name was Henri.

Les The temperature in the house was mostly 84 with the Front livingroom being the coldest room at 78 No cold spots were detected with in any of these rooms. EMF ran constant at a 3 on the 0-100 scale. The highest was in the dining room at 8 and the lowest was in the study and the den at a 1. There were numerous spikes of the meter in the study and back hallway. In the hallway we got spikes of nearly a 5 (2 being normal) in EVP session in response to the questions 1. Kathy- During the investigation I felt drawn to a picture in the hallway. I felt a loving energy coming from the woman in the photo. In the office I felt a heavy sensation in my chest and a general feeling of uneasyness.

Want to look into the masks more.
As the humidity lessens in the Florida atmosphere, it means one thing: Fall is approaching the sunshine state. With the season comes the promise of the Hallowe’en holiday, a time of great activity for paranormal investigators. Hallowe’en is a mixture of secular and sacred, mundane and profane. It hails from the Celtic celebration of the New Year in which time was a mixture of the old and the new year, thus the normal order of the universe was temporarily suspended. Over time, it has moved from a secondary secular holiday of costumes and candy to an outright celebration of raunchiness and debauchery to everything in between.
For 2009, the SPIRITS wanted to focus on something a little bit different than the standard Hallowe’en themed article. We’ve chosen the Carmen House investigation to fulfill this desire. Not only did this home host a paranormal investigation and recheck, but it is a museum to culture. The owners have decorated with magnificent art hailing from various parts of Africa. Faces preserved from the past peer forth from all corners of the house. What better theme than that of the mask could we select to fit this season?
The use of masks appears to date back to prehistoric humanity. Cave and rock paintings indicate the creation of masks as used in ceremony, and possibly for the hunting and taming of animals. They hail from every culture including Asia, Africa, Greece, and both North and South American cultures. The use of masks is often one of the esoteric; they are used to represent figures and creatures from the native explanatory mythology. They also create a form of symbolic code in which the viewer and the participants in a culture can identify the figure represented in the imagery.
Today, we have our own cultural interpretation of masks. We recognize the cowl of Batman, the pointed hooked nose of a hag, or the grotesque as represented by a ghoul’s face. As would happen with cultures that used their masks for religious rites, the wearer of the guise hides his true face. Thus, his or her true persona is also hidden allowing the wearer to take on the characteristics defined by the mask. For Hallowe’en, this can be shown through the “trick” aspect; practical jokes that would not be tolerated at other times of the year are pardoned to a greater degree when performed on this night. The behavior of tricksters may be enhanced by their wearing of the mask – quite literally, the wearer’s personality is consumed by the mask. They are no longer themselves.
For the Carmen House investigation, several things were discovered in relationship to the supernatural. The home owner reports the presence of family members who have passed over. A death that took place near the property may also retain an element of energy with the impression of the dead man lightly echoing in the house. One SPIRITS member even picked up the presence of a “troll” figure – likely an elemental – in one part of the building. This is a rare event for the SPIRITS of St. Petersburg. However, additional research showed that trolls (or earth elementals) do like places that are embedded in the earth, and this room was built lower than the rest of the house. They are also tied to stones with holes in them – and the property held two large stones taken from the ocean, one of which held an empty center. The “troll” was asked to leave by one of the homeowners and did not show up on the second recheck.
What is fascinating is that on both investigations, SPIRITS members honed in on two masks displayed in the study. One bore a bright red face and the other had exaggerated elongated features. These two images stood side-by-side. The red-faced mask, an image representing wisdom, not only caught the eye but produced a distinctly uncomfortable sensation for several who looked upon it. One homeowner reported that she did not really like the mask and protested its arrival to the house. The other, however, felt no menace from it.
Instead, his focus was on the elongated mask of a hunting archetype from Africa. This mask, he reported, had been the troublesome soul for him. He had acquired it but felt that the mask “fought” his ownership. At one time, he placed the mask upon a body-form (an alterations dummy) that was in his bedroom. When he left, the dummy and the mask faced the bed. He locked his bedroom door (this particular door had a lock and key for this room alone) and left the apartment (also locking the apartment with a separate key). Upon returning home, he discovered the doors still locked but when he went inside, the mask and dummy had turned completely around; now the backs of both faced the bed. The oddness of this is that the keys to the room were accounted for and no one could have gotten into the room without a key. So, how did the mask turn around unless of its own will? And thus, dear readers, this article wraps up with that question to ponder.
If we had advice to give on the upcoming night of spectral celebration it would be a reminder to respect the mask one wears. If the wearer identifies with the mask, who is to say that the mask doesn’t identify with the wearer? After all, masks serve as a physical link between the natural and supernatural worlds. Who is to say that those mysterious ephemeral beings can’t work their agenda through you?
