VLT
April  16, 2005

VLT is an enigmatic and older place with much history to it.  It is quite remarkable for its beauty, size, and location, but for the SPIRITS it was significant for the EVPs it produced.

An EVP (or Electronic Voice Phenomena) is a ghostly voice captured through the use of equipment.  Its known origins hail to the 1970s when a birdwatcher set up a reel-to-reel recorder outside to capture birdsongs.  Though the recorder was left in a secluded location without known human presence, when he played the tapes back he heard mysterious voices whispering on the tape.

Since that time, EVPs have gained in popularity even evolving to the status of a movie-worthy topic in White Noise.  (Do note, however, that the EVPs used in the movie were allegedly real, but the plot, itself, was fictitious).

This phenomena, however, is not without its critics.  Some believe that in order to create an EVP there must be white noise generated in the background, while others believe that this is not necessary.  In order to hear (or at least clean up) most EVPs a special program must be used to infiltrate the low-frequency sound spectrum.  Often, in order to "hear" a recording, the listener is subject to suggestion (i.e., the recorder often has to tell the person what to listen to, or, if televised, script is printed on the screen).  Could it be that EVPs are a form of "audio inkblot," with the mind trying to make sense of sound instead of image?

Despite the controversies, many ghost investigation groups continue to work with recordings in hopes of capturing one of these elusive specters in action.  The tools used for recording now vary from tape recorders with outside microphones (internal mechanisms can make noise that can be recorded by internal microphones and mistaken for phenomena), to digital recorders, video cameras, and even digital cameras with video capability.

The SPIRITS of St. Petersburg continue to experiment with EVPs, though the group is cautious of what is labeled genuine and what could be explainable by circumstances.  The team has learned through experience that not all attempts are successful.  One of the first tries at EVP making by the fledgling co-founders in 2000 resulted to a humorous end.  The homeowner agreed to set up a tape recorder in her home and to leave it recording while she was gone.  She returned the recorder to the team for evaluations.  Throughout the recording were a series of evenly spaced ticking sounds that grow louder and softer as the tape played.  Uncertain of what it could be, one SPIRITS member took the recording to a musician to listen to.  She immediately pinpointed the noise:  the recorder was set in the proximity of a non-digital clock.  The ticks were the second hand turning; it grew louder and softer because the air conditioning kicked on and off throughout the day.

However, VLT proved to be a little bit different.  With more seasoned members attending, and a variety of equipment present, the group gained not one but two successful EVP recordings.

The area was reputed to be haunted in several places. While trying to capture an EVP, we had a conversation with a ghostly presence named "Bob," who was quite certain he was deceased.  When asked how he knew, he told sensitives that he could go places he was unable to when he was alive.  One sensitive, in reference to the mixed genders of the team going both into the men's and women's bathrooms during the investigation, joked that Bob could go into the "mysterious" area of the lady's bathroom.  Playing the recording back, the instant before the sensitive started to joke about going into the lady's room, there was a garbled word muttered in a male voice; after listening to it carefully the SPIRITS determined that the word was "bathroom."  Perhaps, then, the joke wasn't quite so random after all!

The second EVP came from an area haunted by a little girl.  Already there was a report that a person had captured a recording there before the SPIRITS arrived.  While self-recording a song, she saw a child run past the doorway.  She turned to look and saw nothing there.  When she played the tape back later, a series of childish giggles are heard during the moment she paused to look around.

Using a video recording to survey the surroundings, the SPIRITS encountered not one little girl but two.  One was the ghost that had resided there before. The other was, apparently, a drop-in visitor.  "Emily," the resident ghost, was happy, perky, and energetic.  She interacted with equipment, at one point "sitting" on the EMF meter to make the siren go off.  But the other little girl was sad and her death was one of great misfortune. She was cold, fearful and alone.  By the end of the night, Emily played happily in the room alone; the other little girl heard her grandmother calling from the "light" and decided, with the blessing of those present, to cross over.

It is the sad little girl who made a powerful impression in the post-investigation review.  When the videotape was played back, the segment before the actual session began held four potential sounds.  Though the recorder is on, it is aimed at the floor and only the investigator's shoes can be seen.  The first noise is a sigh; if it is a word it is indistinguishable.  Then, there are a series of words spaced apart.  The first is "Mom", then "Dad", and then she calls for "Mom" again.   It sounds as if the little girl stands right next to the microphone.  Later, the video camera records the entire group, now assembled and seated and working with both children.  Though everyone is recorded speaking, not one voice sounds like the mysterious recording.

When it comes to EVPs, there is an endless world of research to do.  What are they really, and how can investigators get better quality recordings?  Perhaps the only answers will come with time and more advanced technology.     But, the next time you try and record a family gathering with your video recorder watch the play back carefully.  You never know who all might be there, captured not by sight or video lens, but by voice alone.

VLT Investigation - 10:30 PM April 16, 2005
Report Written: 3:10 PM April 17, 2005
By: David Michaels

Before the investigation even officially began, Denise started sensing
the activity of one or more spirits.  I wasn't "tuned in" yet, so I
quickly got myself ready and began tapping into my psy-sensitivity
too.  Right away, I picked up a rather strong and focused presence of
an older woman.  She stood by a picture and doorway in the room that
we all gathered.

Our team split into two groups.  Throughout the investigation, I
sensed some activity and some weak presences, but nothing too strong
or specific.

An interesting note, however, was how my internal energy level seemed
to fluctuate rather dramatically.  There were moments when I felt
really hyper and energy, exploding with energy.  Then at other places,
my energy would mysteriously drain, causing me to feel very exhausted.
Overall, I was normal and level, but at unexplained times and
locations, my energy level could change significantly.

Due to the enormous size of this building, our group reconviened after
we each finished our half of the area.  We then shared our
experiences, to determine which areas we needed to collectively focus
on.

Scott had a lot more activity than we did.  He picked up not one but
multiple entities--most of which were readily recognized and confirmed
by the staff working there.  However, all the clues and experiences
were soon verified by the staff.  The entities we found and verified
included:

Robert/Bob, a man who apparently died by falling and breaking his
neck, although he didn't seem to have died at the location.  He had a
habit of flipping the back of girl's hair, "kissing" them on the nape
of the neck.  The women working there all knew the feeling.

Ronald "Baldwin?", an elderly gentleman who apparently had some kind
of stake or investment or ownership in the theater.  He called it "his
theater" and "his show" and "his kingdom."  He even had a preferred
seat he wanted reserved for him and his wife, Lily.

"James" who had a habit of hanging out in female bathrooms and staring
at girls peeing.  He was very sexually-focused and perverted.  He was
the presence that made the girls feel uncomfortable in the dressing
rooms and bathrooms.

The elderly woman (that I had picked up), who apparently liked singing
opera style.  (I believe we think he name was Veronica or something
like that -- I don't have it written in my notes.)

And Emily, a little girl who enjoyed playing there.  She was very
friendly, playful, and energetic.  And constantly made referrences to
a living kid there that she liked to play with.

Those were the main ones...but those certainly weren't the only ones.

At a few different times, we sensed a lot of busyness and activity,
like a spiritual party or galla.  It could have been "residual
memories," an energy left over from previous actual events.

While focusing on Emily, another unexpected visitor came by.  Another
little girl, named Rebecca, that we first confused for Emily.  But as
we looked more closely at her, it was a totally different girl --
someone who was apparently violated, attacked, and murdered by
(possibly) her own father.  She came from St. Petersburg, we clearly
received, and seemed to have died approximately 10 or so years ago.
The girl was very frightened and sad.  We weren't sure what to do to
help her.  We thought to suggest that she "go to the light," where we
knew she'd heal and feel better.  Shortly after thinking of this
possibility, we noticed Rebecca's presence was growing weaker.  We
sensed that a "Nanna" or "Nanny" was calling Rebecca away, into the
light, into a better place.  As far as we could tell, Rebecca did go
with her Nanna, and as far as we know, she's in a better place now.

Overall, the evening was very exhausting for us, but not in a bad way.
It was a very late investigation, running until 3-something in the
morning.  There was also quite a lot of activity,
spiritually-speaking, that kept us psy-sensitives busy.

This report certainly doesn't cover all the details and events.  But
suffice to say, the overall experience was positive, with LOTS of
validations, and the staff was pleasant to work with.  It was an
investigation I am glad to have participated on.

Jeanne's report:
Our night at the Theatre began at 11pm.  Seven S.P.I.R.I.T.S. members were present, along with seven VLT staff members.  We split into two groups. I went with Scott and Charles, and several staff members followed us and watched.  On this investigation, I didn't use my ELF meter much. I was concentrating on taking pictures, and digital recordings, and writing down Scott's impressions. We went into the lighting booth of the smaller theatre, and Scott sensed a woman with long blond hair, in a pink gown.  She was singing opera.  He said that her name was Veronica, and she died at age 89 on Oct. 10th, 1987.  He said that she was from Boston, and had performed in Clearwater. She likes this theatre, and watches the performances. She likes someone here named Sheila, or Shelly.  We moved into a tower area with a ladder up to the roof. We felt a cold spot where the temperature dropped from 71 degrees to 60.  Charles felt a cold spot on his hand, then felt like something pulling his hand down.  Scott felt a male presence. He has reddish hair, and is somewhat scruffy. He wears heavy boots, and can be heard walking up there.  His name is Robert or Bob Wilson, and he was a lighting tech. He's territorial about his area. He was 28 when he died from a broken neck from a fall.  At this point, my camera's batteries died, and I had to run downstairs to get more.  We continued down a hallway toward some rehearsal rooms when Scott sensed a little girl skipping in the hall. Her name was Emily. Scott said that she's there because either she had died there, or her body had been there. We turned the digital recorder on, and asked her questions.  Scott asked if she likes to close doors in that hallway, and his EMF spiked.  We went into one of the rehearsal rooms, and he said that she was spinning around and dancing in there. She likes that room because it's where kids rehearse for shows. She likes someone there named Timmy. She calls him "bug-eyed Timmy".  She said that she liked "Annie", and Scott said that that was the play "Annie" and not a person.  He sensed that she died of either pneumonia or suffocation.  We moved on to the media room.  Nothing there, except Scott sensed a green vase. We saw no vases, so moved on. In the second rehearsal room, Scott smelled perfume, and sensed a woman in a pink gown, and big hat. Back in the hallway later, he spotted the dress in one of the photos of past shows. We went into a break room, and saw a green vase sitting on top of the refrigerator.  Back in the hallway, heading toward the balcony entrance, Scott said that there was a strong smell of decay and burned flesh. He sensed a military man. Next, we went to the light booth of the other theatre, and "Bob" was there.  He told Scott that he likes to touch people on the nape of their neck, and play with their hair. We got EMF activity exiting the booth. We started toward the balcony when we heard a door open. We were the only ones in that area. The other group was down on the stage. We went to the end of that hall to a meeting room, called the Presidents room. We found a door ajar in there. The staff members with us said that that door was usually closed. We closed it, then headed for the balcony.  Entering the balcony, Scott immediately sensed an older man there. His name was Ronald Baldwin, and he had thinning hair, and liver spots on his forehead. He was gruff and controlling, and acted like he owned the place. He said that his seat there was #103. He liked to sit up there, and watch the rehearsals during the day. He got very angry when things went wrong.  He didn't like someone there named Stan. Scott thought that he had been a heavy smoker, and had died of lung cancer.  We left the balcony, and went downstairs to the main seating area, and the stage.  We got nothing unusual there. We went into an orchestra pit, and Scott sensed a calico cat there. He said that it had belonged to one of the musicians. The last place we checked was a work room. One of the theatre staff made a comment about equipment turning on in there, and Scott heard voice say "it's too trivial to mess with equipment".  At this point, our two groups met back in the green room, and discussed our findings.  The other group had also sensed an older woman in a flowing dress. They said that she was singing. She knew that she was dead, and was sad that she couldn't be involved in the theatre anymore. She said that she liked the theatre's production of "Fiddler on the Roof".  They also picked up a scruffy male with some sort of trauma to the head and neck. Denise had sensed another man at the end of a hall, who seemed a little sinister. He said "come here" to her, but she didn't want to go any closer to him.  After our discussion, both groups went out together to investigate the active areas.  In a stairway, we encountered "Bob".  I turned on my recorder, and we asked questions. The sensitives heard him say that he had died from a fall down some stairs.  Brandy asked if he had a message for us.  Scott heard him say that now he can go in the women's room.  We all laughed at that. Later when I listened to the tape of that conversation, right before Scott said the comment about the women's room, I can hear a voice mutter something. It sounds like a male voice, almost a whisper. I can't make out what it says. After the conversation with "Bob" we went into the hallway, and the sensitives said that they were drawn to a women's bathroom. We all went in, and a male presence was in there. He was a young man, who called himself James Dean.  Scott and David said that he was a peeping tom.  He liked to hang out and spy on the women.  Maybe "Bob" was talking about him?  Denise said that he was probably the presence she felt earlier, the creepy one saying "come here".  After the bathroom, we returned to the Presidents room, and checked to see if the door that we had shut earlier was still closed. It was. In that room, Denise felt like an out of body feeling. We all took pictures of her. I got 3 pictures in a row with orbs above her.  Next, we went back to the balcony where "Ronald" was.  David sensed that he didn't want anyone in his seat, or the one next to it. That was his wife Lilly's seat. We sat around those 2 seats, and asked questions.  Scott said that he wanted his seats saved during shows, and was offended when the theatre sold "his" seats. I recorded this question and answer session also, but heard nothing unusual in it.  Next, we visited the rehearsal room, where the little girl "Emily" was. Scott said that she had curly blond hair and a white dress with a blue sash. He said that she plays in this room, and likes all the kids there. Denise and David felt that she had been abused and killed, possibly by a father figure.  Scott said that he thought that they were hearing a different girl.  He said that Emily said "they're talking about the other girl".  Denise thought her name was Rebecca. Emily said that she didn't know Rebecca. A little later, Rebecca seemed to leave, and Emily was very active. She was running around the room and giggling.  Brandy put down her EMF meter, and we asked Emily questions. The meter was spiking after most of the questions.  I taped this portion also.  Later, I heard nothing unusual in the replay.  Finally, we all returned to the green room with the VLT staff to hear their story. Some of their experiences were similar to our findings. Some have seen and heard a little girl.  Others have felt their hair and neck being touched.  Someone in the lighting booth saw a woman floating by. In the women's room, stall doors would lock, and an "Out of Order" sign would move. Sinks would be turned on. Many would have a feeling of being watched in the dressing rooms. Doors would open by themselves.  In conclusion,  I got 16 digital pictures with orbs, one questionable one that looks like smoke(?)  It's possibly glare. I have a roll of 35mm film yet to be developed.  I'll have to have the rest of the SPIRITS listen to the recording of the muttering voice, and get their opinions on that.  I am sorry for the rambling nature of this report, but I wanted to finish it while it was all still fresh. It had been a very long night, and we finished up around 3:30am.  It certainly was a very active and exciting night in the theatre!

Scott E's report:
Veronica, Bob, Emily, Ronald and James. These are the names of the dead that echo across the stages of the Venice Theater. After reviewing the activities of the evening's hunt, I decided to focus my report on describing the five energies we encountered on the early morning of April 17th.
After breaking into groups  the Alpha team, to which I was part of, headed towards the second stage area. As we rounded the corner, I could clear her a woman's voice singing. She was hitting some amazingly hit notes, which reminded me of Opera. I asked the other group if they heard the music and we began to flow the sound. Upon entering the sound booth of the second stage, I got the image of a young woman, in her late 30s maybe early 40s,  with long flowing blond hair. She was wearing a full length dress of a light color. The name Veronica came to me and I asked the other members to take a picture of the stage. In the image that Charles took shows where Veronica was standing.
Upon leaving Veronica's area, I encountered a strong male energy. He was in his late 20s and had reddish facal hair. I wouldn't say a full beard, but more along the lines of unshaven. The name Robert or Bob came into my mind. Bob told me that he spends a lot of time around lights and that he had passed from a broken neck after falling. This tower area has a long ladder that leads to the roof. Everyone in the group, could feel a cold wind appear and disappear in this area. Charles had an amazing experience where the cold wrapped around his hand. I also felt that Bob was a friendly energy. He was wearing tan pants with heavy black boots. He said that the workers knew him by his foot steps. It was told later the workers could hear heavy foot steps at night when there was no there to make them.
This next energy, I feel in love with. Her name is Emily and is a sweet seven year old that hangs out in the dance studios. As we entered the hallway leading to this area, I clearly heard a small child giggle. Emily has flowing blond hair with curls. She is wearing a white dress with a blue belt and loves to play with the children. I was drawn into the second dance studio where I was later told Emily had been heard and seen by an actor while practicing. The Theater staff even have a small child giggling on tape that they think is her.  Emily told me that she liked to play Duck, Duck Goose with the other children and that she had a friend named Timmy that had bug like eyes. Emily also brought the name Annie to me. It wasn't the name of someone, but a theme.  After the two groups came back to this room, it was discovered that this room was where the children performs and summer camp is held. The children play Duck, Duck Goose and there is a worker at the theater who performed in Annie the musical and also had bug like eyes.
Emily was very active when the whole 14 member group came back to this room. She ran around the room playing Duck, Duck, Goose with everyone and was very joyful. At one point when Brandy brought out her EMF, Emily began answering questions by causing the equipment to beep. She even decided to set on the EMF causing it to go nuts for a good two minutes. A lovely child and a lot of fun.
The forth energy I came across was a very protective one. His name was Ronald and the only words to really describe this person is "The President". It is interesting that I didn't receive this energy until entering the President's Room of the theater. On the walls are pictures of all the presidents that have run the theater. Ronald is an old man, in his late 50s early 60s. I saw him dressed in a suit and tie and he seats in seat 103. From there he watches over his investment and is very protective of the performances. Ronald said that he didn't like Stan, who was a worker there at the theater and that he wanted them to stop screwing around. We are not sure whom Ronald was upset with but a couple weeks before that night two non-theater works had hung lights up in this area. He was directing his anger toward the area the workers had been, from what the staff had told us, these workers had done the job wrong. At one point Lilly, Ronald's wife, appeared. I am not sure if she was more of a projection from Ronald's or if Lilly was really there. Ronald did have a request for the staff of the theater. He asked that seats 103 and 104 be left open for him and his wife. The staff wasn't sure if this was possible but said that they would try.
Last and, for all the female staff members of the theater, not least there is James. James is in his late teens. I see him as being around 16 or 17. Like most 16 or 17 year old men, James as only one thing on his mind. This subject is Sex. James spend a lot of his time hanging out in the woman's bathroom, the woman's dressing rooms and the showers. A more dark energy then the other ones in the theater. James enjoys watching the woman do their things in the bathrooms. Now James could very well have not been his name while walking the Earth, but he was given it because the image of James Dean came into my mind while inside this bathroom. I see him in the 1950s with dark blue jeans with the bottoms turned up and a red or white t shirt. After hearing about James and his interest, it was decided by all the female workers that they would starting waiting until they got home to use the bath.
It was a wonderful night at the theater for the Spirits group and we didn't even have to buy tickets for the show.

Because the theatre was so large we opted not to do both floors as a cold walk through.

Scott: Stage 2 booth:  heard a woman siging opera; Veronica, long blonde hair, died 10/12/87.
Shelly or Sheila; smelled like lilacs.  In dance studio had a little girl; pink dress with hat.  Eliza Doo Little.  Likes Timmy or Jimmmy; likes the musical Annie.  She likes to skip.

Tower, strong cold spot; Bob Wislon a name that came to mind.  Broke his neck; hangs around electronics and is 28 years old.  Scriffy looking; temperature drops 71 -60 degrees.  Someone grabbed Charles' hand.

Mangers office:  negative feelings; someone died in a fire; burnt flesh.

Booth:  Bob was back; he liked to touch women in the back of the nek.

Ronald Baldwin:  a mangerial type figure who was up on the balcony; doesn't like "Stan", died of lung cancer.

In the Orchestral pit:  cat showed up.

Charles:  Feeling a heavy hand when someone grabbed it.

Denise:  Before this started she saw a female with long flowing dress and long hair showing herself as an old woman.

Exit on the balcony:  somebody waled by.  She saw a scruffy looking male with a beard, 40 years old, who died of a had injury.

Stage 2 area:  woman, floating around me (Brandy) as I took readings.

David:  Lady is there; elderly presence.  Kept feeling energy shifts.

We went bac to the upstairs to see the child, downstairs hallwa in front of prop area, towner, dance studio, booth, stage 2.

Second walk through:
EMF 0 - 100 scale, it was on a 6.

Ladies room:  Male figure in the bathroom.  He plays tricks; a James Dean type figure.  Brandy and Scott both heard him "growl".

Bob does not like him; he followed the group and considered this ghost to be a pervert.

Dance studio:  we found two girls; one was killed and the other was Emily.  The child who was killed did not speak much but was frightened.  She did not want to be there; she was sexually assaulted before being killed.  Her name was Rebecca Ann and he died 10 years ago.  She heard her grandmother call her; we told her to go to her grandmother.  She faded from the room.

Emily liked "Bug eyed Jimmy" who did play in Annie.  "Sat" on my EMF meter; it was the only time that the meter continued to go off for a long period of time.

Second floor:  lady in white showed up.  She let us take pictures (see odd image above).

Interview of employees:

Emily has been recorded by at least one person at the theater on tape.
Folks have heard singing and the party going when no one is around.
Bob; a fall -- two women were contacted by Bob before.  One has felt him touch her hair.
1 employee did see a woman in white.
Bathroom:  stalls upstairs are constantly messed with.  Sinks come on when no one is there.
Mainstage:  Doors do close by themselves.

Conclusions:
Wow, where to begin with this one?  First, it displays plenty of classic haunting phases.  The bathroom sinks running when no one is there; doors closing on their own; sense of someone present; unintentional EVP.

I experienced enough at the location to know that it is quite active.  The EMF meter's reactions, the strange images on digital camera.  I am amazed at the images that I did get.  The strange mist in the area where sensitives indicated that the lady in white stood; the dark orb where "Ronald" pointed out who he was unhappy with, the mists in the stage 2 area where camera and equipment malfunctioned.  All of it was completely amazing.

I was delighted that the SPIRITS finally got to do a late night investigation when the window of  opportunity was at its best.  I think that the results were worth it.

This was a long, late night hunt in a very large place.  When I first arrived and entered the Green Room, I sensed a slender female in a light colored flowing long dress standing on the stairs watching us.  She was very pretty.  As the female moved around, she appeared to be floating.  Her dress would flow behind her.  After we broke up into teams, I sensed her leave the Green Room and follow Scott's team.  It was later confirmed that Scott also felt the female presence and felt her following them from the room.

In the main lobby, I sensed a male watching us from the balcony.  He was standing by an exit sign.  A possible orb was captured in this location at the same time he was believed to be standing there.  I sensed that he was an older male with a scruffy beard.

When in the Stage II area, I felt the female floating around us.  Brandy stated that she was having strange spikes on the EMF meter.  It appeared to me that the female was following her while she walked around the stage area.  Prior to leaving Stage II, I again sensed a male whom died from trauma to his head.  This is as much information that I could get at this time from either entity.

The strangest area that I investigated was in the hallway behind Stage II.  When standing looking at the laundry room I heard a male voice call "Come here".  It sounded very sinister.  Scott later advised that he had met a younger male whom was very sexual in nature.  He believed the entity was being sexual towards me and not sinister.  Thinking about it, that was probably a good explanation.  I also felt this male was interested in one of the female employees.  Her office was his domain.

After both groups met up again we walked through the hotter spots.  In one of the rooms, Scott sensed a small child.  I also sensed one, but as we talked, it was obvious we were talking about two different children.  The one I was seeing had been abused and murdered.  Scott worked with the other child entity and we tried to help the abused child find peace.  We believed that a loved one came and took her home.

Towards the conclusion of this investigation, we were standing in an open area and I felt that I was floating and somewhat disoriented.  Several team members also sensed I was not completely there and came to assist.  They sensed that I was hovering over my body.  Several photos were taken and orbs were captured directly above me.  This left the question if we can produce our own orbs if experiencing an out of body type experience, or was there a spirit there with me causing me to go towards their realm?

In conclusion, this hunt was quite active and exhausting.  A lot of confirmation had been received from the employees and I felt very comfortable with the information I got.  A recheck in the future would be worthwhile.

4/30/05 addition:  Developed one roll of film; 3 images came back with mists or orbs.  None of the other images were positive; this camera is NOT prone to false positives.

Brandy's Images:
Misty images with orb from Stage 2 (where we got activity)
Brandy's Images:
Dark orb image where Denise had her contact experience.
Brandy's Images:
Dark orb on stage where David indicated Ronald "pointed"
Brandy's Images:
Strange misty image where "the white lady" was standing.
Charles images:  Orb in dance studio with "Emily" and orb in stairwell with "Bob" maifestation.
Denise's images:
Scott's image:
