Notes from Saturday walk through......(12-06-08) (Mary and Brandy)
Mary and I walked the hotel again. We noticed that the area outside of the hotel from the stairs to rooms 212/213 was strange feeling. However, I wondered about bringing a leveller to see if the floor is slanted. I wondered if Les might do that tmrw night and make that part of his and Beth's tour? I tried to lie down and look at the floor; it looked level "longways" but I'm wondering if it is uneven from front to back in the hotel.
We did check the area around 220 and felt nothing.
On the 6th floor area, Mary and I were able to find the "maid's storage" that is mentioned in the hotel information area. There were two areas that we logically thought were the storage areas, but intuitively we both agreed that one area felt stranger than the other and that was the hot spot reported (outside of room 601). We were right (verified by desk clerk).
We did go up to the 7th floor and walked through. Mary smelled "something bad" like a "dirty wet dog" outside 701 and by the external exit doors. We were looking for room 717, which was reported by the hotel staff (not really haunted but an odd key event where a person staying in the room was able to use their key to get into room 217). I noticed NO smell -- absolutely no scent (not even the "candy scent" that I associate with the hotel). However, when we returned to the area about 5 minutes later the "candy smell" was back, and Mary's "dirty wet dog" odor was much reduced (according to Mary).
We did check the area around 717, which was apparently occupied at the time. I felt nothing.
We walked around the hotel and looked at the lot. Mary's research showed that a house existed at 401 3rd Ave North; this house likely was where the hotel lobby is. According to Mary:
Yes this is the Harry Case family. According to City Directories he and his family lived at 401 3rd Av N just before he announced his plans for the hotel. There is an entrance on the 3rd Av side. It is my feeling that the part of the hotel that would now be where the manager's office as well as the little store area and perhaps part of the lobby was part of this house or at least the property.
The skinny lot where the mininal parking is was probably 411 3rd Av N home of a physician.

Sensation of energy
Odd behavior of equipment
The detection of aromas (olfactory)
4. In review of the footage, recording, or photographs taken at the location, which of the following did you find? (Please check all that apply)
Orb images (digital)
5. What technical observations did you note during the investigation? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Cheryl: Since it is a business, A/C and heating remained on during the investigation. We were allowed total access of the hotel which made for a thorough investigation. There seems to be a plethora of unshielded electrical wires and lights. Several high EMFs were detected from those sources, with one of the strongest going down the middle of the bed in the room we investigated. These high fields could affect the human psyche and may cause physical reactions as well to those sensitive to high EMFs. I also had a lot of electronic interference on my digital voice recorder which I have not experienced before. The noise was similar to the "galloping buzz" heard when a cell phone about to ring gets too close to an audio speaker.
6. What sensitive observations did you note during the investigation? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Cheryl: I got chills in the hallway by the conference room. The room with the checkerboard floor had gave me the sensation of years of energy absorbed by the floor. I felt drawn to the marble stairs in the lobby. The 2nd floor hallway seemed to have the energy or feel of children running up and down the hallway. I did not like the old end of the 6th floor. There was a feeling of walking through a time warp as I walked from the older part of the hotel to the newer part.
7. What researched/historical information did you learn about this location? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Cheryl: I did not have much information other than it was a hotel built in the 1920's in the style of Chicago architecture.
8. On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate the haunting of this location? Note on scale: 1 represents "no haunting", 5 "moderate haunting" and 10 "extremely haunted"?
6
9. What issues does the review team need to address with the occupant (homeowner, business owner, resident)? What aspects of the investigation need to be re-addressed, retested, or clarified?
Cheryl: I'd like to know more history of the building's use other than that of a hotel. Hospital, etc? I'd like to interview more hotel employees.
10. Is there any other information that you would like to add about this investigation? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Cheryl: While I personally feel I've not investigated enough to determine if it's haunted, I think it could hold great adventures for our group. I like the feel of the hotel and would participate in future investigations there.

Les I ran an EMF meter and got very high readings in the hallway leading from the dining-kitchen area down to the pool area. Especially near the conference room we will be using for our event. Also high readings around the kitchen area at the back of the dining room. the only other place I got unusually high readings was on the 2nd floor outside room #212. All other high readings were explained away by electrical equipment rooms located on each floor.

6. What sensitive observations did you note during the investigation? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Beth-Feeling of energy in the first floor hallway near arch and again near the coference room. In the dining area there was a sensation of being watched, I sensed a female dressed in the attire of and hairstyle from the 1940's. The woman was scurrying in short bursts. The name or word "nurse" came to mind. In the second floor hallway there was a sensation of energy near rooms 212 & 213. Upon entering room 212, I no longer felt the energy.

5. What technical observations did you note during the investigation? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Mary: When the team was in the room suggested by Beth as having activity, I was watching an EMF meter for fluctuations while Brandy posed questions for the Paranormal Puck. The feedback from the Puck was much more active than it has been in the past ie the length of the string of words was greater and the words were different from other investigations. There were time during this that the meter was observed to spike
6. What sensitive observations did you note during the investigation? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Mary: In the dining area of the hotel, I was drawn to the middle of two tables and a certain chair in that arrangement. I had the impression of the name "Blaney." It was from this approximate location that I captured the image of a large, self-illuminated orbI also felt definite activity back in the kitchen area near the doors to the kitchen. Walking through the archways leading to the newer part of the hotel. there was definite energy that was almost tangible. I had noticed it this time as well as on a short investigation that Verna and I had done several days before. While I did not pick it up again on this investigation, Rm 213 was significant to me...during this investigation, Beth centered on Rm 212 which was directly across the hall. My impression is that there is definite activity in the hotel.
7. What researched/historical information did you learn about this location? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Mary: The Pennsylvania Hotel was built by Harry Case whose architect was the same one who designed the St Petersburg Yacht Club and the Princess Martha Hotel. Opening during the boom years of St Petersburg, the Pennsylvanial had amenities that while common now, were not necessarily so then. Each room had steam heat, its own telephone and a private bath. It was a seasonal hotel with the season lasting from approximately October 11 to May 1. It was in fact the last of the seasonal hotels in St Petersburg/ Research found that it is one of few buildings in St Pete with a basement. Harry Case hit financial difficulty as did many with the Great Depression and in only a few short years, he lost this grand hotel. He died not long afterward, never fully recovering from his financial reverses and the loss of his beloved hotel. Ninian Bond, a former Kentucky state senator, literally bought the hotel on the courthouse steps for back taxes. He and his sons established a "hotel dynasty" in St Pete which lasted for many years. Also as with all downtown hotels except the Suwaunee, the Pennsylvania housed troops during World War II.

My audacity program would not record at the hotel. I had to utilize my hand held recorder and convert the files when I got home. Not sure why this happened. EMF seemed all over the place; suspect the wiring in the old part is part of it. Two orb images but likely dust. One part of EVP had a strange feminine whisper to it. Unsure what is being said or what to make of it.
6. What sensitive observations did you note during the investigation? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Brandy: Dizzy on the 2nd floor and on the 7th floor. Kept smelling an odd aroma but later discovered that it appears to be something that the hotel does produce to keep it smelling good. Very disconcerting to go from one side of the hotel to the other; felt as if I was going from 1985 to 1920, and so on. The group discussion showed that Charles felt dizzy on the 6th and 5th floor; on the 7th his compass did spin. Les had high EMF on the 1st floor. Beth felt energy in the serving area, felt energy of a woman from the WWI/WWII era; hairstyle matched this. She was a nurse named Fran and moved very quickly in short bursts. In the 1st floor hallway she felt chills, 2nd floor felt odd from 212; light headed, sad. Mary: High energy toward archways on the 1st floors; heavy energy. In the serving area got the name "Blaney" (last name). Got two orb images, one which appears to have a self illuminating orb, from the general area. 2nd floor gave her a headache. Cheryl: felt kids running; EMF on stairwell from 1st to second floor. She did not like the 6th floor, or room 605. Brandy: A few spots of dizziness on the 7th, 6th and 5th floors.
7. What researched/historical information did you learn about this location? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Brandy: Built in 1925 and confirmed by Mary, opened in 1926. Hotel added to in 2006. No known deaths or injuries on location. Thrilled with the Chicago Style architecture.

10. Is there any other information that you would like to add about this investigation? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
EVP session: Mary reported spikes on EMF meter with "Are you here with us?" "Are you male" "Did you die in this building" "Did you die of an accident" (drop in energy), "Did you commit suicide (temp flux as per Charles), What is the last year that you remember (EMF spike), "Do you have a message that you want to pass on" EMF flux; Age: spikes on 11 - 20, 31-40, and an EM drop at 81 - 90. Additional questions got EMF: Beth: Did you die from heart disease or heart attack? Are you afraid here? (Temp flux, Charles) and "Was something bad found in the dresser?" (EMF spike).
