Courtyard by Marriott, Pennsylvania Hotel downtown St. Petersburg
SPIRITS of the Season Event
Notes from interview with staff member, 11/22/08.

The staff member has worked at the hotel for two years.  Currently, she is a night auditor.

Q:  Have you heard of any haunted phenomena?

A:  A few guests hear things...hear sounds of people talking and there is no one around.  Some of the house keeping staff say that when they go to certain areas, they feel a sensation of spookiness.

A guest the other day walked down and as he was checking out he said that "you have some ghost trapped in the hotel".  He was a business man.

Some guests said that they hear kids running through the hall.

The kitchen area is reported as feeling watched or feeling weird.

The historic side has phenomena.  Room 220 on the second floor is reported for phenomena.  People hear noises and hear whispering around them at night. The storage on this side (historic side) of the building is where the cleaning staff have to look for material on the 6th floor.  That is where they feel creepy.

Q:  Has anyone died in the hotel?
A:  I don't know of anyone who has died in the hotel.

Q:  Have there been any accidents?
A:  Not that I know of.  I asked the same questions.  (Why?)  I am curious about the history of the hotel.

Q: Have you had any experiences here?
A:  I used to walk the floors at night and did feel as if someone is walking behind me.  I would run through those areas.

A series of questions was asked to determine what phenomena is reported:

Second floor has peripheriphal vision manifestation/shadowy figure (adult size); 220 is the one that guests say there is something in the hotel.

No objects moving or known to disappear

Sounds: whispers

Sensation: as if someone is close to you.

In areas of strangeness would run; does not feel scary, just odd.

Q: What do you know of the history of the hotel?

A:  It was built in 1925, opened in 1926.  (Mary:  This is firm.  The information is found in newspaper records.)
Mary: The architect for the hotel also built the Princess Martha and the Yaucht Club.

Area beside hotel was a barber shop and a restaurant (no fatalities).  It was bought and rennovated for the new wing in 2006.

All seven floors are original; new side only had a few floors to match the same size as the old.  When did they build the new part (October 2006); construction started 8 months before the wing was opened.

Notes from Saturday walk through......(12-06-08) (Mary and Brandy)
Mary and I walked the hotel again.  We noticed that the area outside of the hotel from the stairs to rooms 212/213 was strange feeling.  However, I wondered about bringing a leveller to see if the floor is slanted.  I wondered if Les might do that tmrw night and make that part of his and Beth's tour?  I tried to lie down and look at the floor; it looked level "longways" but I'm wondering if it is uneven from front to back in the hotel.

We did check the area around 220 and felt nothing.

On the 6th floor area, Mary and I were able to find the "maid's storage" that is mentioned in the hotel information area.  There were two areas that we logically thought were the storage areas, but intuitively we both agreed that one area felt stranger than the other and that was the hot spot reported (outside of room 601).  We were right (verified by desk clerk).

We did go up to the 7th floor and walked through.  Mary smelled "something bad" like a "dirty wet dog" outside 701 and by the external exit doors.  We were looking for room 717, which was reported by the hotel staff (not really haunted but an odd key event where a person staying in the room was able to use their key to get into room 217).  I noticed NO smell -- absolutely no scent (not even the "candy scent" that I associate with the hotel).  However, when we returned to the area about 5 minutes later the "candy smell" was back, and Mary's "dirty wet dog" odor was much reduced (according to Mary).

We did check the area around 717, which was apparently occupied at the time.  I felt nothing.

We walked around the hotel and looked at the lot.  Mary's research showed that a house existed at 401 3rd Ave North; this house likely was where the hotel lobby is.  According to Mary:

Yes this is the Harry Case family.  According to City Directories he and his family lived at 401 3rd Av N just before he announced his plans for the hotel.  There is an entrance on the 3rd Av side.  It is my feeling that the part of the hotel that would now be where the manager's office as well as the little store area and perhaps part of the lobby was part of this house or at least the property.

The skinny lot where the mininal parking is was probably 411 3rd Av N  home of a physician.

SPIRITS REPORTS

Cheryl
1. What was your role in this investigation? (Please check one)
Investigator (general)
2. What equipment did you use on this investigation?
Digital camera
Video camera
Electro Magnetic Field Meter (EMF meter)
3. What phenomena did you experience on this investigation? (Please check all that apply)
Temperature related phenomena (hot or cold spots)
Sensation of energy
Odd behavior of equipment
The detection of aromas (olfactory)
4. In review of the footage, recording, or photographs taken at the location, which of the following did you find? (Please check all that apply)
Orb images (digital)
5. What technical observations did you note during the investigation? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Cheryl: Since it is a business, A/C and heating remained on during the investigation. We were allowed total access of the hotel which made for a thorough investigation. There seems to be a plethora of unshielded electrical wires and lights. Several high EMFs were detected from those sources, with one of the strongest going down the middle of the bed in the room we investigated. These high fields could affect the human psyche and may cause physical reactions as well to those sensitive to high EMFs. I also had a lot of electronic interference on my digital voice recorder which I have not experienced before. The noise was similar to the "galloping buzz" heard when a cell phone about to ring gets too close to an audio speaker.
6. What sensitive observations did you note during the investigation? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Cheryl: I got chills in the hallway by the conference room. The room with the checkerboard floor had gave me the sensation of years of energy absorbed by the floor. I felt drawn to the marble stairs in the lobby. The 2nd floor hallway seemed to have the energy or feel of children running up and down the hallway. I did not like the old end of the 6th floor. There was a feeling of walking through a time warp as I walked from the older part of the hotel to the newer part.
7. What researched/historical information did you learn about this location? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Cheryl: I did not have much information other than it was a hotel built in the 1920's in the style of Chicago architecture.
8. On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate the haunting of this location? Note on scale: 1 represents "no haunting", 5 "moderate haunting" and 10 "extremely haunted"?
6
9. What issues does the review team need to address with the occupant (homeowner, business owner, resident)? What aspects of the investigation need to be re-addressed, retested, or clarified?
Cheryl: I'd like to know more history of the building's use other than that of a hotel. Hospital, etc? I'd like to interview more hotel employees.
10. Is there any other information that you would like to add about this investigation? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Cheryl: While I personally feel I've not investigated enough to determine if it's haunted, I think it could hold great adventures for our group. I like the feel of the hotel and would participate in future investigations there.

Les I ran an EMF meter and got very high readings in the hallway leading from the dining-kitchen area down to the pool area. Especially near the conference room we will be using for our event. Also high readings around the kitchen area at the back of the dining room. the only other place I got unusually high readings was on the 2nd floor outside room #212. All other high readings were explained away by electrical equipment rooms located on each floor.

6. What sensitive observations did you note during the investigation? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Beth-Feeling of energy in the first floor hallway near arch and again near the coference room. In the dining area there was a sensation of being watched, I sensed a female dressed in the attire of and hairstyle from the 1940's. The woman was scurrying in short bursts. The name or word "nurse" came to mind. In the second floor hallway there was a sensation of energy near rooms 212 & 213. Upon entering room 212, I no longer felt the energy.

5. What technical observations did you note during the investigation? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Mary: When the team was in the room suggested by Beth as having activity, I was watching an EMF meter for fluctuations while Brandy posed questions for the Paranormal Puck. The feedback from the Puck was much more active than it has been in the past ie the length of the string of words was greater and the words were different from other investigations. There were time during this that the meter was observed to spike
6. What sensitive observations did you note during the investigation? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Mary: In the dining area of the hotel, I was drawn to the middle of two tables and a certain chair in that arrangement. I had the impression of the name "Blaney." It was from this approximate location that I captured the image of a large, self-illuminated orbI also felt definite activity back in the kitchen area near the doors to the kitchen. Walking through the archways leading to the newer part of the hotel. there was definite energy that was almost tangible. I had noticed it this time as well as on a short investigation that Verna and I had done several days before. While I did not pick it up again on this investigation, Rm 213 was significant to me...during this investigation, Beth centered on Rm 212 which was directly across the hall. My impression is that there is definite activity in the hotel.
7. What researched/historical information did you learn about this location? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Mary: The Pennsylvania Hotel was built by Harry Case whose architect was the same one who designed the St Petersburg Yacht Club and the Princess Martha Hotel. Opening during the boom years of St Petersburg, the Pennsylvanial had amenities that while common now, were not necessarily so then. Each room had steam heat, its own telephone and a private bath. It was a seasonal hotel with the season lasting from approximately October 11 to May 1. It was in fact the last of the seasonal hotels in St Petersburg/ Research found that it is one of few buildings in St Pete with a basement. Harry Case hit financial difficulty as did many with the Great Depression and in only a few short years, he lost this grand hotel. He died not long afterward, never fully recovering from his financial reverses and the loss of his beloved hotel. Ninian Bond, a former Kentucky state senator, literally bought the hotel on the courthouse steps for back taxes. He and his sons established a "hotel dynasty" in St Pete which lasted for many years. Also as with all downtown hotels except the Suwaunee, the Pennsylvania housed troops during World War II.

5. What technical observations did you note during the investigation? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
My audacity program would not record at the hotel. I had to utilize my hand held recorder and convert the files when I got home. Not sure why this happened. EMF seemed all over the place; suspect the wiring in the old part is part of it. Two orb images but likely dust. One part of EVP had a strange feminine whisper to it. Unsure what is being said or what to make of it.
6. What sensitive observations did you note during the investigation? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Brandy: Dizzy on the 2nd floor and on the 7th floor. Kept smelling an odd aroma but later discovered that it appears to be something that the hotel does produce to keep it smelling good. Very disconcerting to go from one side of the hotel to the other; felt as if I was going from 1985 to 1920, and so on. The group discussion showed that Charles felt dizzy on the 6th and 5th floor; on the 7th his compass did spin. Les had high EMF on the 1st floor. Beth felt energy in the serving area, felt energy of a woman from the WWI/WWII era; hairstyle matched this. She was a nurse named Fran and moved very quickly in short bursts. In the 1st floor hallway she felt chills, 2nd floor felt odd from 212; light headed, sad. Mary: High energy toward archways on the 1st floors; heavy energy. In the serving area got the name "Blaney" (last name). Got two orb images, one which appears to have a self illuminating orb, from the general area. 2nd floor gave her a headache. Cheryl: felt kids running; EMF on stairwell from 1st to second floor. She did not like the 6th floor, or room 605. Brandy: A few spots of dizziness on the 7th, 6th and 5th floors.
7. What researched/historical information did you learn about this location? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
Brandy: Built in 1925 and confirmed by Mary, opened in 1926. Hotel added to in 2006. No known deaths or injuries on location. Thrilled with the Chicago Style architecture.

Need to find the 6th floor storage and check those out.
10. Is there any other information that you would like to add about this investigation? For purposes of categorizing data, please post your first name, followed by your response.
EVP session: Mary reported spikes on EMF meter with "Are you here with us?" "Are you male" "Did you die in this building" "Did you die of an accident" (drop in energy), "Did you commit suicide (temp flux as per Charles), What is the last year that you remember (EMF spike), "Do you have a message that you want to pass on" EMF flux; Age: spikes on 11 - 20, 31-40, and an EM drop at 81 - 90. Additional questions got EMF: Beth: Did you die from heart disease or heart attack? Are you afraid here? (Temp flux, Charles) and "Was something bad found in the dresser?" (EMF spike).

E-mail discussion on sound files:

Beth: Yes, and we heard "fall" after the question "Did you die from an accident?"  Les reminded me of  the puck session with this....
User: Did you die in this room?
            problem dresser fall

Hmmm?

Cher:  I agree it sounds like "fall". The voice right after I believe is Charles talking about the temperature fluctuating. However, I don't think it's Charles that says "fall".

Charles:  I don't remember speaking at that time.

HISTORY
When was the structure built?
We think the hotel was build in 1925.

Digital by Les.  Conference room.
Staff Interview 12-06-08

We also did an interview on our way out with a guest services representative.

Question: Have you had any paranormal experiences?
Answer:  The first week that I was here I was training on the computer.  Right in the middle of the training, a drawer opened up for no reason.  That was the only thing that happened.

What do you know of copy machines?  Can they just run (the scanner moves) for no reason?  (SPIRITS answer:  Probably.  Will need to check into it, but some machines may cycle through when on even when no one is using them).

Question:  Have you had any guest reports on activity here?
Answer:  Yes.  Two weeks ago a guest reported that we had a lot of trapped spirits here.  That was all he said as he walked out to go to the store.

Another guest said that they could not sleep in a room.  They were the only ones in the room but they kept hearing voices.  This was probably room 220.  It's the coldest room in the hotel.  This was around 9 in the evening.  We sent a valet into the room.  He stood there for a few seconds and one of the door handles started to turn.  He left right then.

Question:  Any other reports?
Answer:  No, that's about it directly to me.

After this, Mary and I walked around the outside of the hotel.  Mary knew that a house had been at 401 3rd Ave. North; we guessed that this house was probably over the parking lot and the area where the manager's office is.  It may be the reason that the manager's office is one of the haunted areas as it may intersect with where the house once stood.  (Mary -- was this the "Case" family?)

Les:  Didn’t see anything, didn’t feel  anything.  Took pictures (got lots of orbs).  Timed EVP sessions.

Charlene:  In the electrical room, we went in and the girls went out.  the door bolt was out on it.  they shut the door and it locked.  when we opened it the bolt was closed.  Charles was talking about feeling things in 617 and so they tried the fountain pen and it just lay there.  They went up to the end table and they put a glass on the table.  it went all the way to the edge and came back.  And then he could lay it down and it would just jiggle.

Beth:  Room 212 EMF spikes.  217 feeling energy, getting a lot of chills.  Room 220 we did an evp session (before we did any pictures).  we had spikes when we asked if there was a female.  It spiked when we asked if there was a female and if it used the telephone.  It spiked whenever I asked if it tried to communicate with people who stayed in the room.  room 408 I was feeling energy in that room.  Joey's phone turned on by itself and it locked by itself before he could get it to turn off.  I was feeling pressure and dizzy.  6th floor, closet, I got the name Charles and I heard "fall" .  We did an EVP session in 607 and we heard a lot of clicks and we weren't sure what that was from.

Sue:
Very sick to stomach in room 212.  220 felt very sick.
EMF went off in 212.  Drawn to the window in 212.  Possible contemplation of suicide; or potential jump at window.  220 was crazy; felt nautious, meters were going off.

Jennifer:
Nothing.  Discovered that the aroma was fabreeze dispensors.

Audrey:
Air felt stuffy on all floors, can breath down here.  Got two image on her camera (card too big to download)

Alexis: Second floor def. has most activity and is the most intriguing.  I could stay there the whole night and it draws me in.  I felt a male presences, younger, but reached his maturity.  He was still young.  I felt a female, very somber, reclusive.  We did get EVPs in 220 (at least 3).

Mary:  On room 408 -- walked in and temp went from 68 to 86 on night stand.  Seemed to be around 72 to 73.  It flickered on the suicide question.  we left 408 and went to 6, and the K II meter spiked in storage closet.  We tested to see if there were any power fields, there weren't.  We checked the elevator to see if it was the issue for the sensation, but when Amanda and Yana went outside they watched the deadbolt lock and shut and no one touched the door.  607, the temp fluctuated.  In that room we walked in and I noticed the clock; I thought it was flickering but it turned out that it was not even on.  walking down the all on the 6th floor, there was a jinor energy fluc on 618.  We tried an EVP session in 212 and there was a temp flux there.  In 217 we had most activity -- we watched a glass roll on the night stand.  We watched the glass roll like a pendulum.  A number of times -- it did this.  Noted that it was beveled and we tried to be very careful about the beveled glass.  It would vibrate for an entire minute.  this happened at least 3 times with a vibration.  The little boy tried the same thing didn't even move; another sensitive saw a light blue aura by it.  We went to 220 and did an EVP and did one in 217.  We didn't seem to pick up much of anything.  Kim has looked at pictures.  there is an orb in 217 above Charles' head.  It is soldid and small.

Charles:  4th floor:  massive temp change in 408.  Fluc on female, died of accident and "more than one entitiy".  It would go back and forth and drop a little bit.  It would go from a low of 68 to a high of 86 and it would do this several times.  6th floor I felt dizzy in hallway in storage room and I felt dizzy when i want into storage room.  Temp change, and fluctuated on "natural causes" and "accident".  217 felt dizzy when walked in, felt like in a mystery house and felt off centered.  Put a pen on floor to see if it would roll, tried a glass, tried putting glass onto an end table; temp went from 74 to 71.  Glass started to roll for several times, slowed down and shook.  We tried it several times and it would mostly shake.  It would go for a full mimute and shake, tried with pen and toilet paper roll and holder, toilet paper didnt' move at all.  Glass would shake.  Knew glass was beveled.  Youngest member of the ppp came in and sat down where the blue aura was and the glass didn't move at all.  6th floor hallway we heard noises, crackling kind of sound.  We thought it was a door opening but no one was around.  6th floor hallway we heard noises, 220 nothing.

Amanda L.  As soon as we got on the 4th floor I got dizzy the entire time.  I felt that there was something behind us the entire time.  I had kept getting dizzy between 408 and 412 a huge feeling of dread and agony; went away after 412.  On the 6th floor we were in the storage closet and it opened up for suicide, the first name that popped into my head was "Jane".  The door slammed shut behind us as we left with people in the room.  We heard a door opening when we were in the new hallway and we looked; no one visible.  On the 2nd floor, room 220 smelled like a cigar.  when i was going down the hallway, the stairway from the 2nd to the 1st floor, I got really dizzy.

Yana:  Same as Amanda; when we were in the storage room, I felt nautious.  In 220, it smelled like cigars and a feeling of lonliness.

SPIRITS Jeanne:  Our group started on the 4th floor in room 408.  We did an EVP session,  and Charles had some temperature fluctuations on some of the questions.

Next, we went up to the 6th floor storage room.  During an EVP session there, my EMF meter had several large spikes. We checked outside the room to for power boxes, or anything else that could cause spikes.  When two of our group went out to check, the deadbolt lock closed.  They had to turn it to let us out.  We continued on to room 607.  I tried another EVP session in that room.

We went down to the second floor last.  We did and EVP session in room 212, then went to room 217.  In that room, Mary and Charles both said that they felt dizzy- like the floor was uneven.  We tried an experiment with a pen on the night stand to see if it would roll.  Then we tried a glass.  It was a beveled glass, and it rolled back and forth for what seemed like a long time.  One of the members of PPP came into the room, and said that he saw a blue aura in there.  We finished up in room 220.  I did another EVP recording there.

We went down to the lobby and looked at our pictures on the computers there.  I got one with an orb over Charles when he was watching the glass rolling.  I didn't hear anything unusual in any of my recordings.

Post investigation, room 217 recheck:
Beth, Les, Brandy, Verna and Mary went to 217 to check on the rolling glass.  We were able to replicate the rolling glass, though not quite to the original extent of rolling that Mary's group experience (PPP's sensitive reported seeing a blue aura in the area of the glass rolling as well).

Verna followed up with the following:

Hi Everyone,

When I came home, I had to try and see if a similar glass (like the one at the hotel) would continue to roll in the same pattern. I did it and found that it reacted the same way. I had Partha watch the glass with me. He told me that this thing I was experiencing was called Center of Inertia.

I found a descent definition for this:

Inertia \In*er"ti*a\ , n. [L., idleness, fr. iners idle. See
Inert.]
1. (Physics) That property of matter by which it tends when
at rest to remain so, and when in motion to continue in
motion, and in the same straight line or direction, unless
acted on by some external force; -- sometimes called vis
inerti[ae].

2. Inertness; indisposition to motion, exertion, or action;
want of energy; sluggishness.

I am sure that there are other possibilities. Please let me know if this sounds plausible.

:) Verna.

Les also confirmed that the floors are uneven.  The table in 217 is even, but the floor in the room is uneven.

Hello, first I want to thank you so much for inviting my friend and I.  I attached some pics that I took.  The first one was in room 408 were charles was getting a high tempurture reading of 86 degrees.  The other two pictures were taken on the hallway of the fourth floor.  I felt like there was some one behind us, so I got flash happy...  Also on the sixth floor the year 1932 keep going through my mind...  Anyways, thank you again for thinking of me I really had an amazing time.

Thank You- Amanda L.
