In the field of paranormal investigation, it is always advisable to host a variety of equipment. The SPIRITS of St. Petersburg often utilize hand held equipment for its ease of use and portability. Among the equipment hosted is a Polaroid camera. After years of use with a limited amount of photos allowed per investigation due to the expense of the film, the investigation at Cypress was the first, and perhaps only, one to provide results with this particular device.Polaroid cameras are unique. A type of film camera, they are also miniature photo studios as they produce an instant result which allows an investigator immediate access to the image. Film cameras, which are still used in limited quantity for SPIRITS investigation, require additional time for development. However, unlike digital cameras, Polaroid cameras utilize chemicals, rather than pure mechanics, to capture an image. These chemicals, in theory, may react differently when in contact with the supernatural. At the very least it is a unique way of capturing an image. It even mimics the ghostly as the images manifest slowly before the eyes of the viewer!To understand the camera one must understand the chemical reactions of the film. This is not an easy process to describe. Essentially, the film is a plastic sheet that contains several color layers with film development chemicals placed in between. The arrangement is a chemical chain reaction set in motion when the picture is taken. The reactive chemicals are released from the border of the plastic sheet when the film passes through a pair of rollers, which spreads the materials into the middle of the film sheet. As the reagent spreads, it reacts with the other chemicals stored in the film. The chemicals dissolve the developer dye which diffuses up toward the image layer. The metallic silver areas at each layer take the dyes so that they stop moving up. The acid layer in the film reacts with the alkali, which allows the image to be seen through the chemicals (this makes the development of the image visible by the viewer watching the process). [Thank you to “Howstuffworks” http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/question605.htm].Some ghost investigators still recommend using Polaroid cameras, though this may become difficult in the near future. Polaroid, which marketed the first instant camera in 1948, stopped making the cameras for commercial use in 2007. The company has also ceased making film. The supply at present is projected to last until 2009, though Polaroid has offered to sell the process to a manufacturer to satisfy photographers in a niche market (http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/02/08/polaroid-abandons-instant-photography/). Alas, that may not help paranormal investigators. Many, it seems, have already abandoned the Polaroid for higher-tech devices.The protocol with the SPIRITS investigation process for the use of this camera is simple. As some believe that the film is sensitive to movement (and to avoid the customary urge to “wave” the film dry), the SPIRITS photographer snaps a picture and then immediately places it, in front of eye witnesses, upon a flat surface. As the investigation proceeds, the photographs are retrieved, again in front of witnesses, during the second walk-through and examined. Cypress, in and amongst the Polaroid shots, had already proved an interesting investigation. The homeowners had some disagreement to the level of the haunting. One believed the home was incredibly haunted while the other did not think that the home was haunted at all. During the investigation, one member was actively pushed during a session that included fluctuating EMF fields, temperature drops, and EVP results. Perhaps for this reason, it is no surprise that the Polaroid also picked up results.The images are slight. In one room there is an odd shadow that did not appear on other digitals nor in any of the replicated Polaroid images. In the closet of one bedroom, where the entity had been seen by another family member, a slight orb also appeared. Though these images were not the most remarkable part of the investigation, they were, in themselves, unique. Out of the stacks of unscanned (and unremarkable) instant camera images, these are the few that appear on the SPIRITS pages. Are they flukes or something more? It is up to the reader to decide.For interested investigators it is advisable to try to take a few Polaroid shots just to try it out. Spirits members present: Brandy, Susan, Denise, Danni, Evie, Mary and I.
Equipment used: Sony digital-8 camcorder. Toshiba convertible PC with WavePad software installed. Temperature meter and EMF indicator.
Weather: Raining
Moon: Waxing Gibbons 93% full, Solar x-ray: Active, Geomagnetic Field: Quiet.
This investigation was labeled by the SPIRITS as a semi-urgent investigation as the homeowner had stated they were very uncomfortable in the residence. Dwelling includes the homeowners, 1-daughter, 1-son and 1-male friend visiting. A second daughter was no longer able to stay in the home due to reported activity and has move out. One really neat cat also resides with this family.
Arrived at the residence with Susan and Brandy. The investigation site was built in 1998. Current homeowner reported that the residence had one previous owner who reportedly left unexpectedly, selling the property below market value.
Brandy opened the investigation in the customary fashion. During the opening and in the northeast corner of the dining room, I saw a dim shadow type form with distinct head and shoulders outline watching the SPIRITS team enter and settle. My impression was the shadow was male and laughing, but, not in a “good way”. I used the camcorder to record the living room, kitchen and into the dining room settling on the corner where the shadow still lingered. The lighting in this house was very nice with large full window both east and west which made for direct light into the camcorder making it difficult to take quality film.
Silent walk-thru starting with Master bedroom: Two teams were assembled with Brandy, Danni, Susan and I moving into the Master bedroom located at the far south side of the dwelling. I started to video the Master bedroom where temperatures mostly held at a steady 80-81 degrees. However, there were very evident cold-spots showing up that recorded a temperature drop to 77-78 degrees when present. The cold-spots would move about the room. The air conditioner has been turned off several hours before SPIRITS arrived and no ceiling fans were turned on. A large red chair, draped with several articles of clothing, a crocheted blanket on the back of the chair with a black “baseball” cap setting on top of the blanket. This area became a focus for me. I requested that the hat be marked for possible movement and we draped a wire around the hat. Just a feeling, but, I had the impression that the hat might move as the investigation progressed. Continued to monitor temps while Brandy recorded noticeable EMF spiking. Many photos both digital and instant Polaroid was taken.
Laundry room: Many EMF readings and I had borrowed an EMF indicator for continuity. Both Brandy’s and my EMF meter would spike/beep at the same time. There was no locatable source for the multiple readings. We ventured into the garage from the laundry room where temperatures were understandably reading into the high 90’s and even topped out at 100. Brandy discovered a significant cold spot between the two cars. I could also feel the cold on my hand and arm as well as a cool breeze around my calves. It was Susan that refocused us on the fact that one of the cars had recently been driven as it was wet from rain. The evaporation from this vehicle was responsible for the cold spot between the cars.
Second bedroom: This room belonged to one daughter who was away at camp. The second bedroom shared a common wall with the Laundry room. Here the EMF spiking continued, more on the shared laundry room wall side of this room. I counted 20-spikes in rapid succession on my meter. When I switched the meter to the opposite side of the room, the spikes continued but at a much lower pace. It was mentioned by one of the team that the house next door had a satellite dish and we are unaware of EMF effects with satellite service when in operation and will need to research this. Brandy noticed the smell of cigarette smoke in the southwest corner of this room. I also smell the order. We attempted to locate the source of the smell on clothes, hats and various items but were unable to target anything smelling of smoke.
We moved into the hallway and bathroom. No temperature flux and no EMR readings.
3rd bedroom labeled the gold and red room: Temperature in this room remained constant at 79 being a bit cooler than the rest of the dwelling. Here the smell of smoke developed in the southwest corner. Several spikes on both EMR meters were recorded. A stereo close by was determined not to be the cause for the spiking.
Kitchen and Breakfast nook: No obvious evidence recorded and the two teams assembled in the breakfast nook for review. Each member gave a report except for me. This was just a simple oversight and I believe our sensitives were anxious to settle on a spot for further investigation as they were most definitely picking up on a 3rd-party presence, who is male, older, a bit raggedy, who is angry but also ready to “play with us” in the Master bedroom.
The camera for theTV monitor/recorder was placed at the furthest west side of the Master bedroom. I set up the Toshiba and set WavePad with a quick test recording. While I was setting up, the group had discovered a distinctive cold spot just inside the bedroom door. The group circled this spot taking various readings of both temperature and EMF signatures. Both sensitives stated the spirit was within the circle. I was distracted momentarily with temperature readings but returned my focus to EVP capture.
EVP and EMF: Brandy’s EMF monitor was highly active during the entire exchange with the 3rd-party presence responding to questions and psy impressions. The presence named itself Sonny Borland or Bowman. Middle name is possible Sutherland. It was reported that Sonny was angry. Not a likeable person. Susan stated early on that she picked up an “acidic” smell. I made 3 separate consecutive recording files for EVPs.

Here is where Sonny becomes violent by pushing Danni very hard causing her to fall back into the dresser. Psy impression: “wants camera off”

Susan passes a note to Brandy and the EMF indicator begins beeping. (Almost like Sonny doesn’t like being ignored) Some equipment became momentarily ineffective. Susan’s written statement to Brandy was about Sonny being a racist and the homeowners are a bi-racial couple. Once we settled Danni down and regrouped we resumed questions to Sonny.
Debbie: “Try to move the black hat over there.” No response. I appealed to Sonny as one Florida native to another to move the hat. No response. I chastised Sonny with “Can’t shove a hat but you can shove a woman?”
Psy impression: “I doesn’t have to impress you”
Susan: “Possibly buried in Lutz” “He was a cop, Denise. That’s why he doesn’t have a record”?
Took Danni out of the room for a short time.
Susan: “Are you from Tampa?” N/A St. Pete or Clearwater? N/A
Are you from Dunedin? – Spike
Debbie: Because Sonny is of a certain age range and date span, I questioned Sonny as to any familiarity with two close family members of mine. Sonny stood a good 90% chance of knowing or having known about these two family members if he truly was from Dunedin during my life time. Though Sonny did respond with multiple EMF spikes to my questions, it was Denise’s idea that Sonny was only messing with me and “lying between his teeth”.
Denise or Brandy asked Sonny: “Do you have a problem with the homeowners?” – Spike
“You don’t like the mixed-marriage?” a very audible guttural grunting noise is heard on the recording. Very male sounding and since the SPIRITS group was comprised entirely of women there is no doubt that Sonny was making his feelings about the home owners’ relationship known.
At this part of the file there was some camera readjustments and talking among the SPIRITS members. Again, multiple spikes are audible as if Sonny is showing is discontent at being ignored. When Denise was rearranging the hat and camera for further telekinetic activity, Danni returns to the room. As Denise asks “can you see the hat?” to the people view the recorder out in the living room, there is an audible spike response from Sonny.
Denise restates that Sonny is lying when he answers my questions. However, there was a very specific and correct answer to my question about which brother was named a certain nickname and Susan picked up on the right brother. There is far more here that I can
relate but I will not involve my family in a public forum without their consent. I will state that I do feel that Sonny did know my father through my father’s line of work.
Since there were so many spikes during our interview with Sonny, Denise requested Brandy to turn the EMF indicator up so that it was less sensitive in order to force Sonny to try harder to spike the needle. Sonny’s response to this test was to really set off the EMF as if to say, “ is this proof enough!”
File 3: Denise, Susan and Brandy, began to relate to Sonny that he really needed to leave the dwelling voluntarily and go someplace he’d like to go instead of being force to go somewhere he might not find so enjoyable.
Denise: “you’re done here. Do you underhand that?”
Sonny: “you’re done here”
Home owner review: The primary female homeowner has become distraught over the activities of Sonny. She has been harrased by Sonny at night when trying to sleep and the lack of sleep is negatively affecting her work and home life. The primary male homeowner, though not believing any of this, is not entirely denying that there may be something in the house. The two daughters have also had interactions with Sonny and have both seen Sonny multiple times. The SPIRITS team spent a great deal of time giving the female homeowner empowerment tools and it appears Sonny “preys” on the weak. I believe we will be hearing again from this household.
Summation: This investigation warrants close follow up with this family. Sonny is a pig and a racist and a real bully as he continues to harass only the female population of the house. Though both of our psys felt that that Sonny was sorry for pushing Danni and that Sonny was leaving the family, I feel that the ending EVP from Sonny indicates just the opposite. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Sonny but that remains to be seen now that the primary female home owner has a clearer understanding of Sonny and his true weaknesses. It is of note here to also mention that Sonny had little tolerance for the SPIRITS team’s lack of patience as he was attempting to learn how to talk with us. Even though he was very capable with the EMF meter, it appears, through the many sighs recorded that Sonny did have something to say and was attempting to make sounds. It just took him awhile to learn to vocalize.

Evie's report
On July 8, 7 members of Tampa Bay Spirits met for an emergency hunt. This was a typical 3 bedroom, 2 bath split plan house. At this point the Spirits members know nothing of the problems in the house. We split into two groups, with each group doing their own investigation. When both teams go completely through the house, we meet and discuss the results & then concentrate on any area where there are abnormal readings or orbs. Our physics felt there is a drop-in entity (not connected to the house or the homeowners) who does not care for the circumstances of the household and is making itself known to the female members of the household. While we were in the room most active, one of the Spirits members was pushed backwards.
I personally did not get any adbnormal readings on my EMF meter but another meter produced high EMF spikes. I also did not get any unusal temperature fluctuations. Out of 50 pictures I took throughout the house, I captured two possible orbs. One is on the bedroom door (left side near the top) and the other is above the picture in the living room.
This was certainly one of our more unusual hunts.

Thermometer has 78-79 degrees for a reading; rain started again. Tested area with compass, which was steady. Area went from being very cold to being steadily warmer.
Chills on arms and legs again.

Discussion:
Susan: MA bedroom, slight stomach pain, temp flux, bathroom side of bed – dread, fear. Can’t sleep in that room; wall in living room (i.e., no energy). Cat: communicates in house, and he is a protector. Laundry room: portal. Daughter’s room: EMF spiking, satellite dish could be interfering with EMF. Smoke in daughter’s room; (cigarette smoke smell); pen quite writing.
Mary: Temp flux in MA bedroom; near far side of room, temp down, cool breeze felt; orbs on some images in livingroom.
Denise: 1st time in the house, anger, verbal arguing. Red and gold room (bedroom 3): hallway, white male. In his 50s, belly, short, dark hair, laughing. “Who do you think you are?” Angry. Not evil, walks back and forth in hall. Doesn’t like daughter’s bedroom; follows investigators “You can try all you want”; wonders about glass or shattering noises, and gets the name “Sonny”.
Evie: No orbs, no thermo registered, no EMF spikes.
Brandy: MA bedroom, cold and spikes, Denise noted entity went over with us at this time. He “told” her he’d come over to the other team (mine). Bedroom 2: smell of smoke; also in bedroom 3.
Dani: 1 orb over Denise, daughter’s room, in foyer.
Debbie was inadvertently left out of the discussion. She later told us she had seen what she thought was a shadow in the house when she first arrived.
While we were talking, Susan got the name Daryn, 53 (or 1953), 1983.
2nd walkthrough.
We started in Bedroom 3, but nothing was going on. We were told to go to the MA bedroom, where we focused the rest of the investigation.
Cold spot: 77 degrees on thermometer.
Tried to get entities name with EMF meter. Daryl had no response, but Sonny did get a spike (tried this question twice). He was 53 years old.
Asked if he was associated with the family (no answer). Land? No reaction. Was he a drop in? Huge spikes; .2 – 1.5.
What did he want? He was angry, agitated. At one point, Dani, standing by the dresser, was pushed back by him. (A rare event fort he spirits).
Asked homeowner if he was buried in Lutz; yes. Last name? Borland (Boyland?)
Deborah asked if he knew her family; appeared to know her family (though Denise thought he may be lying).
Denise asked me to turn the EMF meter up to a higher reading to verify that he was doing this. I put the meter’s siren to 1.5. The meter went off at 2 spikes of 2.0, then a 4-5 second burst of 2.0. EMF from that point on dropped to .6 Denise felt that this was the entity’s way of proving that he was present.
EMF kept spiking .2 to 1.0 when we played back the EVP that Debbie had recorded dealing with “Do you have a message…?”
I asked the entity why he was present. Was his attack on the family racially motivated? EMF beeped. Gender? Nothing. Ethnicity? Nothing. But, Denise and Susan had both noted independently of me (and I also came to this conclusion) that the entity was opposed to the mixed marriage of the homeowner.
Was he from Florida? Yes. Did he work in Florida? Yes. (Possible sheriff?)
Images on Polaroid included a shadow that we could not replicate via Polaroid film.
Homeowner interview:
Old Hag Syndrome: Felt as though I was being pushed down in bed while lying on my side, only saw a shadow.
Animals acting up.
Shadow figures, peripheral vision manifestations, and full manifestation of the entity (14 year old sees old man in grey suit and hat). Doors have closed (bathroom in hall).
Telephone rings often (but could be the phone company). The company came out and said that the frequency signal was too high.
Radio turned on by itself.
Sounds: popping, rustling, voices (heard by 14 year old and homeowner), footsteps heard.
Homeowners report premonitions.
Eyes: one homeowner has developed ocular migraines when this started; she is under a doctor’s care. So far, no reason for it.
Homeowner e-mailed that things had gotten worse; one daughter had a poster pulled off the wall and the other refused to sleep in the house. She did have her Mother-in-law attempt to bless the house and she also did a white sage blessing. A Catholic Priest also blessed the house. She did not feel that it helped, however.
Noted that homeowners were in disagreement about the entity. Wife and daughters believed in it, husband did not. However, we agreed that the belief was empowering the entity; wife placed her faith in the husband to protect her and when she did, the entity stopped. The wife needed to put more of that empowerment in herself…and stand strong
with the daughters.
Conclusion: We do believe that the entity is a drop-in. He was a native Floridian, and he was probably prejudice. He did not like the
mixed marriages….and that is why he was harassing the family. They needed to be strong and united to drive the entity out.

Susan begins her feel on the house
Denise feels anger upon entering the house like arguing. Back bedroom didn’t feel anything. In the hallway she feels an older white man with a big belly laughing with an attitude. He doesn’t go into the daughter’s room. He is watching all of us. Denise got a large orb in living room. Guy has an attitude. She hears a shattering noise or glass breaking. She also gets the name Sonny.
Second walkthrough –
Back bedroom - I captured another orb above Denise. She says entity wants us to go to the master bedroom. Entity says talk to him there.
Master bedroom – Denise feels cold. Feels entity right in front of her. Brandy asked if he is here and emf spiked. Year 2003 mentioned. Says he is a drop-in. Emf goes from a .4 to a 1.5. Denise is getting that he did bad things. Asked if motivated by race and got an emf spike. She says it’s too many questions.
From what I remember Brandy asked what the entity would like us to do. I was standing next to Brandy and across from Denise near the dresser and I was shoved by something. I was instantly terrified and almost started crying.
Brandy turned emf meter way down to make it more sensitive. Entity then made it go off rapidly. Denise and Susan asked him to move on and leave family alone. I all of a sudden feel exhausted.
Double spike when Denise asked if he feels guilty. Entity is weakening asking if he is leaving. Brandy tells him they will leave family alone.
Investigation ends and we try to help homeowner by making some suggestions on ways to deal with the entity and help him to move on.

Upon entering the home I noticed that I was very responsive to the cat.  He began communicating with me almost immediately.Â

The hunt began at 6:20pm., waning moon, rain storm.
Â
We began in the master bedroom. I immediately encountered stomach pain and noticed temperature fluctuations of between 79 and 84 degrees. On the left side of the bed I noticed a feeling of dread, nausea, and shaking. Perhaps the residual of a violent crime? I had the feeling that the homeowner cannot sleep in that room. I had chest pains by the sliding glass door. An older man (53?) perhaps? I get the name Darren.

In the living room temps were 80 to 83 degrees, no EMF.

The garage had temperature fluctuations of between 95 and 103 degrees but these were easily explained by the vehicle recently having been run and rain having fallen on the ground. There were EMF fluctuations but the A/C unit was housed in this location.

The younger daughter’s room had a fairly steady temperature of 79 degrees, and spikes of EMF, we also encountered unexplainable odors of cigarette smoke. There are no smokers in the home. Oddly, my pen would not work as I went to take notes in this daughter’s room. It was a new pen and would work in every other part of the note pad but not in her area of the page.Â

In the older daughter’s bedroom the temperature registered a steady 78 degrees, again brief smell of smoke.

In the kitchen we had nothing of note. I realize that the cat is a guardian and that he knows that whatever is happening he is able to lessen the frequency. He does not like the energy that is coming into the master bedroom.

Reveals that the daughter and wife have had similar experience with seeing a man or shadow wearing a hat. The wife has experienced feelings of someone pushing her down in bed and not being able to sleep. Something or someone has been shaking her awake, watching her and making her feel a sense of dread. The someone watching is not benevolent. The wife also states that the cat sleeps with the daughter and that when the cat was at the groomers, more activitiy occured. When the daughter left for camp, the cat began sleeping with her (on his own accord). It was also confirmed that the entity does not enter the daughter's room, but that he does stand out side and watch her.

Denise and I attempt to contact this person. Denise comes up with “Sonny.â€Â Using our EMF contact meter method we are able to confirm that this man is Sonny, age 53, the last year he remembers is 2003. He is “drop in “ spirit who appears to be a “Florida Cracker†mentality. He is a racist who does not like the racial situation in the home. This is why he has been tormenting the homeowner. At one point he becomes aggressive and physically pushes one of our team members across the room. We decide that we do not want to take this line of questioning any further. We inform the entity that his work with this family is done. He needs to leave the family alone and get out. I told him that he needs to leave the girl alone.

I feel that SPIRITS has come to a point where it is now our obligation to try to rid our clients of their problems. When they come to us they are looking for answers. They know they have a problem. We are helping them identify the problem, but are we now not obligated to help rid them of that problem? Especially if we have now aggravated that entity? If they have an entity that was already active we need to make sure we don’t cause it to be more active and cause more trouble for the homeowner. It is now our responsibility to try to remove the entity or bring peace to the homeowner.  We are now treading on very delicate grounds. I know we are not exorcists, but people are coming to us for help. This is why we did an emergency hunt. We just need to find a happy medium.

Research shows that this property was built in 1999 and the current owner has owned the property since August 2005.
A check with the local Law Enforcement agency’s record section revealed no significant criminal events reported over the last three months. According to county crime statistics, the 3 square mile “grid†in which the family’s home is located, reflects an average to below average number of violent crime reports over the last 7 years. In-depth research of law enforcement reports related specifically to this address, back to 1999, does require a monetary deposit.
Local newspapers also show no news reports related to this address.
An online search of the Social Security Death Index revealed no local, specific matches to any of the possible combinations of names related to the negative entity.
It appears that no events or persons related to what the family members are experiencing have been reported or recorded in any official manner.
