Despite how the media portrays it, ghost investigation does not always involve moaning figures, bleeding walls, or houses sucked into vortexes.

Instead, paranormal investigation groups, such as the SPIRITS of St. Petersburg, look for cold breezes, mild sensations of a presence in the room, unusual electromagnetic fields, and temperature fluctuations. It is in these earthier, though no less dramatic, ways that ghosts make themselves commonly known to the living.

One such event occurred during a mid-October investigation. The team assembled at a home on 5th Avenue in St. Petersburg. The reported phenomena focused almost entirely upon the electrical aspects of the home.

One factor was a continuous cycle of excessive energy usage resulting in abnormally high electric bills. Homeowners worked with the local electric company to augment the home for energy conservation including tinting the windows and adding insulation. The house was repeatedly inspected for areas of weakness, wiring replaced and upgraded, and the power box monitored, but to no avail. The mysterious energy leakages continued.

New machinery and electronics also suffered at an alarming rate: heaters, cars, power switches, timers, and alarm systems were among the appliances replaced repeatedly since the homeowners moved in nearly 2 years ago. The older electronics, however, continued to function perfectly and showed no signs of malfunctions.

Though it is commonly believed that apparitions utilize energy to manifest themselves, it was not much for the team to go on.

However, the SPIRITS were greatly surprised upon arrival as activity started immediately upon opening the investigation. Psi-sensitives, or those able to sense the presences of ghosts, immediately felt a male presence in the home. He gravitated to the areas of the piano room and the bedrooms; he was playful and adventurous. He also had a sense of charm and a flirty nature with women.

As the investigation continued, more phenomena ensued. A secondary entity was detected; an older woman who dwelled in a secondary bedroom. She was kindly, well dressed and presented a proper appearance to those who sensed her.

Those taking readings of the home noted unusual fluctuations in the electromagnetic (EMF) field. Three of the most sensitive EMF meters picked up small spikes in the field that did not appear to be caused by any known natural sources, as many electronics were shut off to prevent false readings.

Images taken during the investigation and while equipment registered mild anomalies shows the presence of orbs. Orbs are theorized to be condensed spiritual energy which the camera is able to record. Orbs often co-inside with equipment and psi-sensitive readings that occur during times of activity.

To avoid the creation of false orbs, homeowners are asked to dust the home prior to the investigation and to turn off as many air-disturbing devices as possible, allowing air-born particles to settle.

The back of the home also continued this unusual trend of phenomena. The third bedroom, located on the opposite side of the house, affected all who went into it. Many felt a sense of dread and anticipation going into the area. One person felt something crawling up the wall, another felt trapped. Still others reported sensations of sharp pains in the back and head.

Photographs taken in the room show milky yellow-white orbs floating along the wall. Immediately outside of the room, two teammates witnessed a bright flash similar to a light bulb exploding near the ceiling and EMF was detected.

Yet, the most telling event was in the kitchen. As the group wrapped up its first walk through of the home, one teammate stood in a cool draft of air. Enjoying the coolness, she realized that the homeowners were instructed to turn off the air conditioning. The homeowner present confirmed that the air was off, and had been off since before the team arrived.

At this point, the column of cold air began to move through the kitchen, past several SPIRITS teammates. As it moved, EMF fluctuated again picking up the movement of the spirit. One image taken during this time shows a potential second manifestation: as the cold air went past, her camera picked up two very strong orb images and a grainy mist pushing past another teammate.

After the investigation, the SPIRITS sat down with the owners to compare notes. For all members of the team, except for the initial contact person, this was the first time they had heard the history of the house or any record of phenomena.

Remarkably, many of the images psi-sensitives picked up were confirmed by the homeowners. The property had once belonged to an elderly couple. The husband was walking outside the home, tripped on the sidewalk and fell. Though he survived, the fall sent him to the hospital and caused enough internal damage to lead to his death. A short time later, his wife was diagnosed with cancer a, herself, died in the home under Hospice care. The current homeowners bought the house from the managers of their estate.

Is it that this couple remains close the house they love and wish to keep it as they had known it in life? That might explain why the older appliances remain intact and functioning. Could this relate to the excessive energy use? And what about the sensations in the back bedroom? The phenomena in the kitchen was moving through the area towards that strange and sullen room.

The mystery of the back room may continue, but both homeowners and the SPIRITS team agree: there is certainly something paranormal happening in the house on 5th Avenue.

Kitchen: A cool breeze blew threw the kitchen. It was so cool that the first teammate to encounter it thought that the air conditioning was on. She called to the homeowner, who confirmed the air was off. Meanwhile, the team registered slight EMF fluctuations. This image was taken during the phenomena, one out of six images. This was the second photo fired during the event. All other images were "normal", lacking the hazy areas and orbs. Note the clarity of the orbs next to this SPIRITS team member.

After the kitchen incidents died down, the team moved to examine the remainder of the house. As we left the kitchen I turned to take one last reading on my EMF meter. It began to fluctuate. Initially, I thought it was related to electronic interference (note: appliances and light switches), but I took a picture any way. The resulting image shows a very light series of orbs at the top of the doorway.

Living Room: 77-79 Deg. Fahrenheit, with no spikes. No major EMF found (.02-.05.).

Bedroom #1 w/ Bath: 77-79 Deg. Fahrenheit, Major EMF found (.02-.08) with spikes of .35, .78, .61, and .48, all associated with the bedding and the west wall. Compass readings in circles from this room. Sensitive Investigators felt several 'individuals' and events from this room. Pictures of 'Orbs' taken from this room.

Kitchen: 79-80 Deg. Fahrenheit, with no spikes. No major EMF found (.14-.39), due to kitchen appliances mostly.

Laundry and Rear Bedroom: 81-84. Deg. Fahrenheit, with no spikes. Major EMF (.01-.08), with spikes of .66, .68, 1.33, and 3.0+ off the scale of a 1-3.0 scale. First time my instruments picked up this much EMF at any location. Investigator Brook also had very high readings in this area, as well as compasses circling and our sensitive investigators being almost overwhelmed in this are of the house. Rear Yard/Greenhouse area: 78.5-81 Deg. Fahrenheit, some EMF found (.00-.04) with two spikes .29, and .64. One 'Orb' captured near the trees along the west wall of the house outside of the Bedroom #1 area; see above.

Rear Garden and Pool area: 76.5-79 Deg. Fahrenheit, No major EMF (.02-.06).

Summations:

This investigation was attended by a standard number of investigators from our group. The homeowners are two men who are roommates, both professionals, with above average intelligence and abilities. Both hold respectable positions in the community and are also furthering their education at nights. After our group assembled, we broke off into groups and began gathering data, including EMF readings, Temperature Readings, Photographic Pictures (Digital, Instant, and Traditional film were used), magnetic compasses, motion detectors, and audio recorders (Both Digital and Cassette/Micro cassette formats used.). We went from room to room, and then re assembled to go over our findings. Then we re examined some areas of interest, and finally talked with the homeowner's to find out what they had experienced.

Peaks of Interest:

Our team divided into two teams of four people each, and began our "Dry Run" through the house. The house was very clean and well kept. The air-conditioning had been turned off, as well as most other electrical devices. The weather was cloudy and the homeowner's animals (dogs) were kept away during the investigation. No power lines were observed running near the house, and no other items of electrical or mechanical oddities were noticed near the property.

My group of four investigators, including one sensitive investigator found that the house and it's furnishings to be very well cared for. A lot of antiques and above average furnishings were observed in this house. Everything was well kept, in its place, and very clean. As our group went into the Bedroom #1, we began to get interesting readings. Many investigators using different types of EMF meters began to register readings of spikes. Compasses in the room began to circle instead of pointing to the earth's magnetic north pole, some in our group had new batteries in their equipment just up and die only after a few minutes use. Thank goodness we always carry spare equipment, spare batteries, and everyone has their own equipment to verify other readings. Orbs were captured on digital and standard photographs from this room by different investigators using different equipment.

The Laundry Room/Rear Bedroom area was also of great interest. In this area everyone in our team had unusually high EMF readings, including myself. My meter went off the scale on the highest settings 3.0+ on a scale of .01-3.0 EMF readings and maintained this reading for a couple of seconds. I also had several other spikes ranging from .66 to 1.33. Investigator Brook who has a special EMF meter which eliminates 'man made' type EMF readings said he got a reading of 2.0 for several seconds in this area as well. Both of our sensitive investigators had trouble entering the room, due to a great rush of emotion and feelings of past experiences from other entities. Orbs were captured on digital and standard photographs from this room by different investigators using different equipment. Sound recordings were also made of this area and the Bedroom #1 area, but the tapes have not been studied as of this report being filed.

Our sensitive investigators reported feeling of dizziness, heaviness, pressure, and cold winds from the Laundry/Rear Bedroom areas. They also had similar feelings from the Bedroom #1 area of the house. The sensitive investigators also had feelings of a small girl running around and hiding behind the door in the Bedroom #1 area, the presence of an older woman who was singing "Johnny Boy" and that of a "frisky man" type figure from the music room. Feelings of a memory or experience were also reported by our sensitive investigators from the Rear Bedroom area.

The homeowners reported several electrical and mechanical problems relating to the house. Multiple appliances have had to be replaced, the entire house has had to be re-wired, lights and light switches burn out at an alarming rate even after the power company has installed spike shielding at the electrical connections to the house, and on some of the major appliances. Electric bills at this property have been four to five times higher then that of a similar house in the area, even after having a new central heat and air unit installed that was energy efficient, having new insulation installed in all the walls and ceiling, and other cost effected alterations to the house. Keys have disappeared and reappeared hours later after being 'lost', and other weird occurrences have been reported.

Do I personally think that this house has paranormal activity, yes. Something that cannot be explained by electricians, the electric company, several other repair men, and after all of the wiring and appliances have been replaced several times eliminates just about any human or electrical mishap or coincidence. Do I think there are ghosts involved, no. As per our sensitives, I think that there are 'after images' or 'memories' or other events taking place here. Possibly due to the collection of antiques, the home itself, and the area that the home is located in. Our team has done investigations in the close proximity to this area, within 5-10 miles of this house, with similar results. Our team will investigate weather or not there is some history involved with this area, or other possible paranormal events. It could be the property sits on a magnetic unstable area, or some other paranormal event. No one know for sure what is happening here, but I do believe something is defiantly occurring that is out of the ordinary.

This was a very interesting case. There are many reports from the homeowners of strange occurrences. And although paranormal causes for these phenomena cannot be established, they cannot be ruled out either. The homeowners tell of new electrical fixtures repeatedly burning out, enormously high electric bills, and possible apportation of objects. The complete homeowners' report is available, so I will not recapitulate it here.

Silent Walkthrough-

I took several dozen photos on the walkthrough. Unfortunately, they did not reveal anything. My Trifield Natural EMF meter read nominal for most of the investigation. There were two locations in which my meter recorded unusual readings. The first was in the 2nd bedroom. This is where Denise felt the presence of several individuals. Her report can elucidate further. In this room, on the bed, my meter did measure a couple small spikes of approximately 2x's the normal ambient readings (.25 on electromagnetic scale). The second room where I had good spikes was the laundry room between the kitchen and 3rd bedroom. On top of the dryer I had consistent readings of 3-4x's the normal ambient readings (.25). Moving on, we next visited the 3rd bedroom. I did not get any meter readings out of the ordinary or any photos worthy of comment. Several members of the group did feel a heaviness walking into the room however. And Susan reported feeling that something did not want her to enter the room. Then as we came out of the 3rd bedroom, we searched for a light switch in the laundry room. We needed to give ourselves some light to take a measurement. In the process of testing 3 light switches in attempts to locate the correct switch for the overhead light, a flash of light was seen near the light fixture. The strange thing was the fact that the switch I had just thrown was not for that light. Because of this, the flash could not have been as a result of flipping the switch, unless of course, the switch has a short in it to the light circuit. There is no confirming evidence of a paranormal explanation, but the incident is deserving of mention.

Perhaps the best phenomenon of the evening was what came next, as we proceeded back into the kitchen from bedroom three. As Denise and Cindy entered the kitchen and moved towards the stove, they both felt a substantial volume of cold air pass over them. At once, they assumed the air conditioning kicked on. This proved not to be the case, for the homeowners quickly verified the air was indeed off. I did not record any abnormal EMF measurements or have anything show up in photos. Unfortunately, I did not have an IR thermometer on this investigation. Perhaps another investigator took a temperature reading during this incident.

Targeted Investigation-

On the silent walkthrough we targeted two locations that needed closer attention: bedrooms 2 & 3. In bedroom 2 Denise and Susan (the sensitives) picked up some interesting impressions. These can be read about in their reports. My photos in this room revealed nothing. However, some of the EMF readings were interesting. The meter spiked about 1.5-2x's ambient reading when several questions/comments by the sensitives were posed. Unfortunately, I only recorded one of the questions that elicited a spike. Susan had mentioned music in relation to a spirit that she was sensing. This made the meter jump 2-3x's ambient reading (.25).

We proceeded next to bedroom #3. Although this was the room of greatest interest to most of the investigators, I did not take any unusual photos or EMF readings. Denise and Susan (the sensitives) did pick up on several items of interest though. They can be reviewed in those investigators' reports.

This is a unique residence with many unanswered questions. Are the strange occurrences due to unseen guests? This is not known. The house definitely deserves some more attention though. Perhaps more concrete empirical evidence could be collected in the future.

Small bedroom: As one of the homeowners turned on the hall light outside the small bedroom, Denise and I witnessed a bright flash -- like a light bulb burning out. Others did not see this flash; homeowner reports this is not normal with the house. The bulbs did not burn out and both were working fine. No other lights, cameras, or flashlights were going at this time.

Verified A/C was off. EMF started to register mild fluctuations.

Leaving the area, I took more EMF readings. Fluctuations in EMF occurred; thought it might be related to the wall switches.

Sean: Laundry room: noted that the 1 - 3 scale had spikes of 1.33, .68 and .66 on his meter; there were several minutes of readings

Denise: Sensed a man playing the piano, coincided with my EMF spike upon walking into the room. He was flirty. Kitchen and eater: cold air; negative feeling in bedroom 3, creeping sensation, felt that a trouble maker stayed in that room, maybe a Richard.

One of the homeowners, named John, had a grandmother named Edna who had dementia, and died in the early 1990's.

Before her death, she had given a print made of Pakistan to her grandson, which he kept in the area of bedroom 2.

Back area of store was rented out 15/20 years ago

Everyone who comes in loves the house and has a positive impression of the place, but they do not like that back room. Homeowners call back room the "Bates Motel".and it was once filled with wood paneling. Very ominous feeling.

Denise mentioned that she feels the reason that the house has so many problems with power is not due to an entity so much as to energy surges. These surges are related to the land.

Conclusion:

I was a bit surprised to find that the entities the SPIRITS picked up was of a grandmother. I wonder if that was a place memory, perhaps a tie with the Pakistan poster.

Who is the flirting gentlemen? Was that the former homeowner? Is he still at the house that he loves? It well could be; spirits have no age limits. When it comes to manifesting, they can appear at any age.

The energy shift: I have heard one other person mention that she has experienced some sort of dimensional overlay on her house; it's just enough to move things or alter things mildly. It is always possible, but I don't know how we can prove that. The homeowners have more than adequately shown that they are working on curtailing the energy expenditures.

I am not sure what to make of this, though I do know that there is SOMETHING going on in the home.

Report of 5th Avenue North

October 10th, 2003

During the silent walk through I experienced no unusual readings anywhere in the front of the house. When passing through the breakfast area however I did receive an EMF spike reading. While in the front bedroom I felt drawn to the back corner behind the door. I felt as if there was a small child hiding there. Susan also mentioned to me that she felt the same thing later.

Every other room felt rather "normal" to me with the exception of the back room or "apartment" I got a very negative feeling in that area of the house. It wasn't because it was dark or narrow it was a feeling in the air. The second I crossed the threshold from the dining room into the laundry room (which is adjacent to the back room) I felt a heaviness and the air was "thicker". Susan validated the feelings as she felt the same way. I kept feeling watched as I stayed in the room and knew that whatever was there did not welcome us at all.

The rest of the house seemed Ok I felt a presence in the piano room especially when I stood near the picture of what I presumed was the Titanic. Someone (I forget who) later mentioned that they felt a sense of drowning in this room. I wonder if it has anything to do with the painting?

Notes from the homeowner indicate that unusual things have happened in the house. Keys have been "stolen" as have some foodstuffs only to have them reappear days later. Also the electrical system has driven up their bills and the car kept in the garage has had to have major components replaced several times wherein the vehicle parked outside has had no mentionable issues.

There is not a doubt in my mind that these two gentlemen are living with additional entities in the house.
