Often times in the field of paranormal investigation things do not always go as planned.  Though the SPIRITS attempts to maintain a steady standard of protocol, sometimes things happen in which we simply must improvise.  This leads to new techniques and insights into the ghostly mind.

Such was the case with the "40th Avenue North" investigation.  The parents of the current homeowners built the structure and three generations had lived there. There were minor phenomena going on within which had been reported for several years by various family members.

The SPIRITS began the investigation by splitting up into two teams, each one going to opposite ends of the home.  Sensitives reported messages coming through right away.  Terms that came through included  "Ohio,"  "apple trees," and "the Navy."  At the end of the investigation, we learned that the current homeowner's parents grew up in Ohio, the homeowner herself had lived in Washington, known for its apple trees, and her father, Walter, was in the Navy.  Walter, though deceased, also "resided" in the home, his spirit staying in the living room.

The most exciting part of the investigation, however, was a male entity that appeared in one of the bedrooms.  He was the reason why we were originally called. The homeowner's daughter, now grown, had stayed in this room.  Throughout her childhood she continually sensed a presence there.  Now it was trying to communicate utilizing our ghost investigation equipment. 

SPIRITS sensitive, Susan, noticed a pattern to the trifield meter in use when she asked questions.  In an experimental move, she asked the entity if he would answer her questions by pushing the needle to the right, increasing EMF, for a "yes" answer.  Brandy enhanced the request by adding that the ghost should let the needle move to the left, decreasing EMF, for "no."  To the group's amazement this worked, so well, in fact, that protocol was broken.  The silent walk through ended and both halves of the team were reunited to observe what happened.

We learned that he was a member of the family, and that he was happy where he was. He said that he watches over the family. For a time, he appeared "fatigued" but after a break, he answered more questions.  At one point, a sensitive picked up that the spirit felt as if he were being used as a "parlor game." The group quickly emphasized that this was no game.  He appreciated the sentiment, and added that he was excited over the recent changes in the family; a wedding had taken place.

Though the results of "40th Avenue North" were moderate for a SPIRITS investigation, we picked up a valuable new technique.  The EMF meter goes beyond measuring field fluctuations; it can be used as a tool for communication.  Since this experiment, the technique has become a standard part of SPIRITS protocol.  Questions have become more specific and the EMF trifield meter has been upgraded, but the results remain the same.  Perhaps this practice can be in the future as a safe and documentable method for proof of ghostly existence.

*Unusual dreams:

Harriet - No

Amy - Yes - often would dream of (at the time) recently deceased co-worker who was "like family" - would always dream the same thing - as if he was coming to our front door. When I would go to open the door he would be gone. This dream occurred several times.

*Lucid dreams: Dreams where you realize you are dreaming and/or take control of the dream

Harriet - No

*Old Hag Syndrome:

Harriet - No - but when between sleep and consciousness I feel as if the room is HUGE and I am very very tiny.

Amy - No

*Paralysis Dreams: One wakes up, but cannot move for a period of time. This may be related to chemical imbalances or pressure in the brain.

Harriet - No

Amy - Yes - quite often infact - about once a month - and often waking up in sweats.

*If animals are in the vicinity, have they been observed acting strangely? Animals often posses instincts and abilities more in tune with their surroundings. Have you noticed your pet having abnormal behavior, such as suddenly becoming aggressive, fearful, or agitated? Does your pet lick the air, follow unseen movement with its eyes, or track something you cannot see?

Harriet - Not that I know of.

Amy - No - but recently one of their cats was put to sleep (KC). He was a cat we acquired while I still lived here and was in high school. Shortly afterwards I dreamt that he found me and would cry and rub on me until I said - everything's OK - right KC - and then he would disappear.

*Peripheral vision manifestations? Do you see movements out of the corner of your eye, turn to look and find there is nothing there?

Harriet - No

Amy - Yes - this would occur a lot especially in the "bedroom" area of the house.

*Full manifestation of an entity?

Harriet - No

Amy - No

Are there cold drafts or cold spots found only in a certain location? Barring, of course, drafts created by the a/c or heating units, fans, and windows. Are there areas of the location that are abnormally cold? Centralized locations, or columns, of coldness that won't go away, or appear to move through the house? Occasionally, these also manifest as pockets of heat, or warm sensations.

Harriet - No

Amy - No

PK activity:

*Do you experience the apportation of objects? Apportation is the manifestation of foreign objects into a location. This may also relate to small household objects that disappear, cannot be found, but "reappear" in either the exact location first searched or in an area where it will be easily found. Metal objects, including keys, coins, and jewelry, seem to be most often affected.

Harriet - Yes

Amy - No

*Have you visual confirmation of objects moving?

Harriet - No

Amy - No

*Abnormal behavior of lights or doors? Have you witnessed lights coming on of their own accord? Doors opening or closing without assistance? Or, have you experienced unlocked doors locking themselves, or visa versa?

Harriet - No

Amy - No

Does the homeowner have natural psi ability? Do you experience the following?

*Expression of SLIder phenomena: SLIder stands for "Street Light Interference". This is paranormal activity relating to the living. Theoretically, SLIders are emitting a low grade of PK (psychokinetic) energy which interacts and interferes with electronic devices. SLIder phenomena includes street lights going off as a person walks by them, electronic devices constantly breaking when a person is near them or attempts to use them, watches dying, batteries dying at an abnormal rate, etc.

Harriet - Yes - light bulbs - street lights.

Amy - Yes - street lights

*Premonitions (future events), clairvoyance (sensing or knowing things that are going on in the present at an entirely different location), or retro cognition (seeing events that took place in the past)?

Harriet - Yes - work related - will have premonition that I'll get a phone call - or my pager will go off - or a feeling to stop at a certain business - and they all end up signing up an account with me.

Amy - somewhat - I can be all of a sudden think about a song - and turn on the radio and its on. Or be listening to the radio - and be able to predict two or three songs in a row. (mostly first thing in the morning)

Are there any OTHER events not covered by those listed above? If so, please list and describe in detail:

Harriet - recently right before sleeping (and my husband is away) - I've had my arm up and resting against his pillow. I then feel a "vibration" as if our recently deceased cat had jumped up on the pillow.

Amy - Just and odd feeling in the computer room. I always feel as if there is someone in there looking over my shoulder while I am at the keyboard. I used to also get this feeling in my old bedroom (smaller room next to the computer room) - I would sometimes wake up out of a dead sleep and turn on the light thinking someone was there.

Brandy's Report

Investigators Present:  Brandy, Sandy, Susan, Denise, Scott, Jeanne, Amy (?)

Others Present:  Homeowner, her daughter.

Pre-Investigation: 

Livingroom:  Denise started to sense entities

Office:  EMF 1.5 by the light; corner contained a socekt which emitted EMF

85 degrees in Temp.

Amy's Room/Guest Room: 

1.5 EMF, outlet 1.25

Denise's camera batteries drained

Master Bedroom:  Sandy felt a female entity looking through, though someone was sitting on the bed.

We broke the pre-investigation at Amy's Room/Guest Room as we started to get EMF surges.  The sensitives started to feel that there was someone present.  We set up a test to see if the EMF meter could be used to channel the entity in a "yes" or "no" fashion.  With a "yes" answer, the entity was to push the needle higher.  With a "no"answer, the needle was to drop.

Due to the large number of SPIRITS members, the group split up.  Susan, Scott, and Jeanne waited in the guest bedroom and worked with the yes/no questions and answers utilizing the EMF meter. 

I went with Susan and Denise to check out the other areas of the house.  I switched to the ELF meter.

Sitting room:  78-80 temp.

0 EMF

Kitchen:  Heaviness, energy.

Denise picked up the name "Louise"

Mom's office:  Energy Shift, hands tingling.

75 degrees, with 0 EMF.

Checking back to the bedroom, Denise, Sandy and I sat with the meter.  Denise sensed the name "Harriet".

It was relayed to me that the entity was an old man.  Denise heard the names Annabell, or Hanna, and alse the name Mitzy.

Working with the old man, it was determined his age in life was 62 or 63 years old.  He died of Congestive heart failrue.

Scott asked if the entities's name was Jason.  EMF jumped from 1.5 to 2.0.

The entity was happy, and was there to say "hello".

He refered to jamie, his grand daughter.  (Note, the granddaughter's name was "Amy" and she invited us to investigate the house).

The current homeowners were related to Amy and her family.

The male entity was thin, with gray hair, white at the temple, brown slacks an a bow tie.

He was related to the year 1928.

Meanwhile, Denise went out to talk to the homeowner.  She mentioned that she was getting the name Arvilla, who was an ancestor of the current family who built the house.  Other family members came through.

Thelma and Walter were the parents of the householder, Harriet, who was the mother of Amy.  Thelma and Walter also came through, as Walter was the male entity in the living room.

They were excited about a chance in the family, possibly Amy's marriage. 

Other terms that came through:  Ohio, both of Amy's grandparents grew up in Ohio.  They also sensed Apple Trees, which possibly related to Washington state, where Amy's mother had lived for a time.  Another picked up ties to the Navy, and it turned out that Walter had been in the Navy while alive.

Comments:  This investigation was very unusual, especially since we broke with protocol with the silent walk through.  It was not as organized as have been previous investigations, but the information came through very rapidly.  The entities present appear to be relatives from Amy's mother's side of the family.  Her father is an extreme skeptic, and was not present for the investigation.

I found it interesting because the camera picked up multiple orbs in areas where Amy sensed phenomena in her home. 

Amy explained that as a child, she had sensed a presence in her room.  She also picked up on one in the study, near the computer.  Hence, though she no longer lived at the home, she thought it might be worthy of investigation.

Her mother supplied a family history.  Her ancestor built the house 40 years ago.  Her bedroom used to be Amy's but later in life she moved into the room that was now the study. 

Conclusion:

The entities appear to be benevolent.  They are happy, but are keeping a watchful eye on the family, who are their descendants.  Much activity has been going on in the family, including a fairly recent marriage.  The entities simply wanted Amy and her mother to know that they are there, as friends.

Jeanne's Report

40th Ave North

We arrived at the home and met with the homeowner and her daughter, Amy.

On the first walk through, we started in the back office. I got no ELF readings there.

Then we went into the guest bedroom. I got no readings, but Brandy's EMF meter got some spikes over the bed. I took pictures all around the room, and of the meter on the bed. We started getting large spikes on the meter, and Scott sensed an older man. He said that the man started showing him images of his life. He said that he grew up in the midwest, possibly Ohio. He had a large family, and lived on a dirt road in a rural area. He said that he had lived around a lot of apple trees at one time. He had been a military man, and was in one of the World Wars, possibly as a medic. Scott also got the name Annabelle. Then he said the name Jason, and the meter spiked. We asked if that was his name, and it spiked again.

We asked if he could answer questions for us using the meter, and it spiked again. We asked him to push the needle up for yes, and down for no. Scott and Susan asked him questions, and the needle went up and down answering them. It was very exciting for all of us. He said that he was a member of the family, and that he was happy where he was. He said that he watches the family. The needle started dropping, and Scott said that the entity was tiring.

At this time, we left the room and continued with the rest of the house. That room had sidetracked us from the initial walk through. Scott and I went into the master bedroom, where we got no meter readings. Then we went into another little office off the garage, and got no readings there either. We met with the other members in the living room. Several members took pictures there while we were sitting there talking.

Someone sensed something in the hallway leading to the guest bedroom, and pictures were taken there, too. They sensed that the entity was back, so we went to that bedroom and asked if he would talk to us again, and if we could record his voice. Denise heard him say that we were treating him like he was a parlor game. One of the members told him that we respected him and appreciated his speaking with us, and that seemed to make him happy. We gathered around and put down the recorder and asked more questions.

After the questioning, we met with the owner to discuss everything.

In conclusion, this investigation was very exciting for me, even though I didn't get any meter readings or find anything in my pictures. Unfortunately, I didn't take a lot of pictures, due to the excitement of the meter communication. We found that fascinating. Other members of the group said that they had never seen anything like it before. I was glad that I got to witness it myself, or I might have found it hard to believe.
